What Are the Fruits of the Spirit?

What does God want to produce in us?- fruit.

Bible teaching on the fruits of the spirit:
‘But the fruits of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, against such things there is no law’ Galatians 5:22-23.
What are the fruits of the spirit?
They are the nine characteristics of God which all work at the same time, with love being the primary fruit from which all other fruits flow. The fruits are the evidence of Gods character working through us. Fruits take a long time to cultivate.

The purpose of the fruits of the spirit:
Propels us to carry out the work of God, enables us to accomplish the plan and purpose of god in our lives. When we become ‘born again’ we are a new creation and Christ works in us through the holy spirit producing fruit. We respond with the fruits rather than reacting with the works of the flesh.

Works of the flesh:
War going on between the sprit and the flesh. Flesh- refers to making decisions according to self independently from God, so the flesh is displeasing to God. Spirit-the wind, breath or spirit made alive onto god.
We need to constantly renew our minds (soul) and recognize and reject the false underlying assumptions that come from the old self, the old way of living, not just deeds but attitudes (before becoming born again). Christ removes the hearts and minds of old routine and puts in place his thoughts, words etc. Washing out falsehood of fear, hatred emotions and bringing clarity, truth and love. Fear is replaced by hope, suspicion replaced by confidence and hatred replaced by love. Vessels of wrath become vessels of patience. Fruits are the external evidence of internal change.

Love- Gives and expects nothing, no matter what others do to us we always seek their highest good. Does not envy, is not jealous, does not seek praise or applause from men, not proud or arrogant or rude, not self-seeking, not easily provoked to anger or quick to take offence, keeps no record of wrongs. Does not rejoice in hatred or evil, suffers long, rejoices in truth, love is truth, hopes all things, love forgives.

Joy- Joy is not happiness, happiness depends on our circumstances, Joy means cheerfulness, calm, gladness, Joy is a sign of God’s presence in our life, is our ability to overcome, failure to walk in the fruits of the spirit will rob us of our Joy. Cultivating Joy: praise God and give him thanks in everything, joy glorifies God through tears and pain.

Peace- state of rest, quietness, calmness, absence of strife, perfect wellbeing, harmonious relationships between God and men. Jesus is the prince of peace and gives peace to all who call upon his name, the key to peace is not absence of conflict but the presence of God in the midst of conflict, trusting in God not your own understanding, peace is a weapon to use in the storm. Choosing peace -choosing to know Jesus to accept God’s forgiveness and be released from punishment.

Patience- longsuffering, endurance, going into a trial with an attitude to see us through, patience tested when you are interrupted, unconvinced, irritated, traffic, ques etc.… To have an optimistic expectation, wise response to life, calm in storm, sense of humor.
Kindness- friendly, courteous, sympathetic, make life easier for others, caring, thinking of another, being straightforward, charity, equivalent to forgiveness.

Goodness- Active kindness, kind character originating from God, goodness follows through on thoughts of kindness.

Faithfulness- firm persuasion, belief in truth, reliable in behavior toward men and God, our faithfulness in God will reflect in our faithfulness to people, not double minded or disloyal, unsteady or unreliable. Follows through keeps its word and tells the truth, keeps commitments and appointments, does not neglect duties. Use your talents do not bury them, honour your marriage, make the most of your time, stand by your friends, manage money, do your best at work. God rewards faithfulness.

Gentleness- Complete surrender to gods will and way for your life, power created from submitting to God, lowly and humble, self-control, submissive spirit toward God and men, to be teachable, deals with sin in love, does not fight for self when criticized, believe God has his hand upon your life, pray, kneeling, yielding, refuse to complain and grumble, does not manipulate, lets God resolve your issues, be gracious not judgemental, teachable not unreachable, endures attacks and cry’s out to lord.

Self-Control- Conquering oneself, continence, temperance, restraining passions and desires, opposite is self-indulgence and excess. Controls passions, appetites, pleasure, desires, impulses, sexual, Self-control is our wall of protection. Does not yield to temptation or give into desires, disciples and masters self.

Crucify the flesh:
Put old self to death by submitting all desires and decisions to the lord. My flesh has been crucified with Christ on the cross. What you obey you follow, what you resist grows weaker, we resist temptation by: walking in the spirit. Alive in the new created man, we then produce fruits. We should walk in the path/way that he lays down for us.
Be productive: Cultivate roots, eliminate weeds-concerns and interests that sap your time, energy and money preventing you from bearing fruit, cooperating with God will prune your life. Pruning- cutting off dead branches. Waiting for the harvest to grow takes time.

Abiding in the vine:
We are a new creation transformed from one who is worldly into one who is godly. Put off the old man and put on the new one. When we are born again, (repent and put our trust in Jesus Christ as our lord and savior, instead of ourselves).
Tree= Tree needs roots, branch needs a vine, leaves need a tree to produce fruit. As disciples of Jesus we are to him as branches are to the vine. Bearing fruit is our main responsibility, as we bear fruit we experience abundant lives. If we do not bear fruit, we will not live abundant lives.
Abide= to dwell, to endure, to remain.
The secret to bearing fruit is to abide in the vine. Secret to living an abundant life is bearing fruit, the secret to bearing fruit is to abide in the vine, the secret to abiding in the vine is obeying God. We have a choice to be full of the holy spirit and bear fruit, which is for the benefit of others. We are being pruned and whatever does not produce fruit is cut off from the vine. We draw life from the vine everyday by being obedient to the words of Jesus.
