We interviewed Mercedes de la Rosa after the URBAN MEDITATIONS BY RITUALS event

Interview with Mercedes de la Rosa, creator of the URBAN MEDITATIONS by RITUALS event.

Urban Meditations by Rituals celebrated its first edition in Barcelona on November 30th.

It was the most multitudinous session of yoga that has been celebrated so far in Barcelona.

More than 500 people attended the meeting, among them, the writer Asha Miró, a habitual meditation practitioner, the model and presenter Mireia Canalda, the influencer and former contestant of Dancing with the Stars among others.

In the wonderful space of Hivernacle del Poble Espanyol in Barcelona, it was shown the new meditation masterclass concept and so far, the most multitudinous in this discipline.

Today we are all victims of mental unrest and dispersion.

Increasing mindfulness can calm the mind and make it stronger to face the constant challenges that life poses.

And that is achieved through meditation.

Therefore, in nosotras.com we wanted to interview the director and creator of the event, Mercedes de la Rosa.

To know more about this discipline and its benefits.

How was the Urban Meditation by RITUALS event? Did you expect the massive reception?

MR: Well, it was wonderful. The truth is that he had never done such a mass meditation class and we did not know how people would get involved. The tickets ended quickly, and the people were very present, attentive and focused during all the time.

The session lasted 1 hour and was divided into three parts, why? Is there any reason to perform some exercises before others?

MR: The people who attended the event do not meditate regularly, so we had to take them by the hand along a path they could travel and in which they experienced what it is to meditate. During the first part we prepare the body; we decontract and relax to be able to sit in the same position for a long time.

In the second part, we train attention through different mindfulness techniques (mindfulness) to maximize our capacity for attention and concentration.

Finally, in the third, we went a little further and, with the relaxed body, we entered into a state of conscious attention.

What benefits does meditation have on our body? Does it benefit us both physically and mentally?

MR: Meditation is a state of absolute awareness that has to be achieved - something like sleep - and has infinite benefits, both physical, mental and emotional.

Among others: it strengthens the immune system, improves the cardiac system (because it slows down the heart rate), increases blood flow and lowers blood pressure. It also reduces levels of stress and anxiety (it is shown that people who meditate have cortisol levels - the stress hormone - lower than people who do not), better sleep quality, facilitates the management of emotions , develops compassion, and fosters trust, love and serenity, among many others.

Could you explain what the mindfulness? And, what benefits does it bring to our health?

MR: Mindfulness means full and conscious attention to the present, without conditioning or prosecution. Through cultivating attention through different techniques (breathing, movement ...) the mind calms down, stabilizes and becomes clear.

The techniques of mindfulness practiced regularly reduce the levels of stress and anxiety, so that usually disappear all the anomalies or discomfort associated with these states (insomnia, headaches, stomach, insomnia ...). Therefore, in addition to improving concentration and attention, it is possible to live more serene, present and full.

In the session, you also performed sound baths (sound healing), Could you explain a little about what it is? What is achieved with this practice?

MR: Healing through sound is one of the oldest forms of healing used by the human being. Everything we have around us is vibration, whether we hear it or not.

The sound bath applies to the body the vibration of sound to help reduce stress, alter consciousness and create a deep sense of peace and well-being for better health. Sound waves enter like waves of the sea and relax all our tensions in a natural way.

More and more people are entering the world of yoga and meditation, What do you think is due? It's just a fad, or are people really aware of the benefits it has?

MR: When so many people demand it, it is because there is a real need. We live quickly and doing a thousand things at once, and that prevents us from being present and healthy, it generates high levels of anxiety, stress, dispersion, illnesses and diseases.

We need to stop and become aware of how we are to recover our physical and mental well-being. Both techniques have this same objective; Yoga does it through postures, breathing and relaxation, while meditation does it through techniques that allow you to enter that state of higher consciousness.

Would you give any advice to those people who have not yet dared with yoga or any similar practice?

MR: Let them try it! And that they experience for themselves if they feel that something changes.

You have spent more than 20 years dedicating yourself to yoga. Certainly, in another interview you commented that you got hooked to its most dynamic side, Could you give us two strokes of what dynamic yoga is?

MR: Dynamic yoga is a type of yoga that, through different sequences of postures with a conscious breath.

On one hand it puts you in shape (you work strength, flexibility, tone all the muscles of the body), also improve health (facilitate the proper functioning of all organs and systems: nervous, circulatory, immune, etc), and lower the levels of stress and anxiety since it lowers the internal noise level of the mind, achieving a state of serenity and awareness that allows you to live more fully.

Now you know more about meditation, yoga and its more dynamic aspects. Do you dare to try it?

Thank you very much for your attention and your time Mercedes.
