UNC basketball coach Roy Williams will make nearly $4 million this season, documents show
The University of North Carolina revealed the full extent of men’s basketball coach Roy Williams’ basic annual compensation for the first time on Wednesday, and it shows Williams is making nearly $4 million for his 2018-19 contract year.
The disclosures came as the university announced a new eight-year extension with Williams through 2027-28. In addition to releasing his employment contract with the school, UNC released his personal services contract with Nike and the amounts he will be receiving as consideration for doing local TV and radio shows under the school’s multimedia and marketing rights contract with Learfield Communications.
The school did not make available his agreement or agreements with Learfield.
Williams' initial annual pay from Learfield will be $1.397 million and it will be $250,000 from Nike.
Williams will get from the school:
-- $541,778 in base salary
-- $1.7 million in additional pay
-- $40,000 as an expense account
Until now, UNC had disclosed only the amounts Williams was getting from the school and documents showing he had permission to get income from various outside activities, including work for Nike and Learfield.
Citing North Carolina state open records law, UNC had not made available reports of Williams or other athletics employees’ outside income that had been required by NCAA rules.
NCAA schools then did away with that reporting for the past two years before recently reinstating it in conjunction with recommendations from a committee on college basketball headed by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
When UNC recently hired Mack Brown as its new football coach, it also disclosed his pay from Nike and Learfield.
