Tiger tracker: Follow Tiger Woods' Sunday round at the Hero World Challenge
Tiger Woods enters the final round of the Hero World Challenge in Nassau, Bahamas, last in the field of 18, 11 shots behind leader Tony Finau, Jon Rahm and Henrik Stenson (-13).
Victory is out of the question, but Woods at least can close out 2018 on a positive note.
And 2018 has been a success for Woods: Seven top-10s, including a runner-up finish in the PGA Championship, and a victory — the 80th of his career — in the Tour Championship.
“Well, the expectations are much different this year, this upcoming year,” Woods said before the Hero World Challenge. “Now I know I can do it. Now it's just about managing and making sure I'm fresh for events because I know I can win tournaments again.
Woods (-2) teed off with Hideki Matsuyama (-3) at 10:42 a.m. ET. Follow his round with shot-by-shot analysis.
No. 16, par 4, 485 yards
Tiger stripes another driver, and he will have a good chance to keep the run going on the hardest hole on the course. The approach skids through the green and is on the fringe at the back. Up and down for par will be a good result.
No. 15, par 5, 548 yards
Tiger's drive misses the fairway just into the rough to the right. He lands his approach just short of the green and it trickles forward. That will leave 30 feet below the hole for eagle. But it's for eagle.
Tiger's eagle putt hits the hole! But it was a bit strong and rattles out. 2 feet coming back for birdie. He knocks in his fourth birdie in five holes. Even par (2 under overall)
Jon Rahm and Tony Finau each birdie the short par-4 seventh and are now at -16.
No. 14, par 4, 292 yards
Tiger hammers his tee shot past the hole location at the front, but just right of the green. Tricky up and down ahead, but it's doable. The chip up the hill from an awkward angle is just a touch too hard, but it stops below the hole about 6 feet for birdie. Could it be three in four holes? Bottom! Another birdie, and Tiger has righted the ship. 1 over (1 under overall)
Tony Finau and Jon Rahm each birdied No. 6 to get to -15.
No. 13, par 4, 483 yards
Another good hole for Tiger, knocking his approach to about 10 feet and then rapping in the birdie putt. 2 over (even par overall)
Tony Finau, Jon Rahm and Henrik Stenson are back in a share of the lead at -14.
No. 12, par 4, 192 yards
A relatively trouble-free par for Tiger, who maybe has stopped the skid? 3 over (1 over overall)
No. 11, par 5, 589 yards
Tiger finally gets a putt to drop, knocking in a 25-footer for birdie. 3 over (1 over overall)
No. 10, par 4, 435 yards
A tee shot in the fairway, and an 8-iron in his hand for the approach, and Tiger still can't quite get it together. The approach is on the green, but nowhere near the hole. Long birdie try ... can walk away with par, but he needs some red numbers.
Not this time. The birdie putt trickles right of the hole, leaving 2 feet for par. 4 over (2 over overall)
Henrik Stenson birdies No. 3, and Jon Rahm birdies No. 2 to get to -14, but Tony Finau birdies 2 and is alone in front at -15.
No. 9, par 5, 603 yards
Tiger really needs something to happen on this par-5. Something does happen, but it's not good. Woods loses his tee shot right into the water. Splash. He will be hitting three from where he lost the ball into the hazard.
Woods has 288 yards to the hole, and he hits a 5-wood ... and this one never has a chance. It's right of the fairway, well short of the green and into the water again. Tiger's game is a mess.
He will be hitting five and still a wedge shot away from the green.
Finally, a good shot. His pitch is a beauty, leaving about 3 feet for bogey. But the damage has been done. 4 over (2 over overall)
Meanwhile: Tony Finau birdies No. 2 and is alone in front at -14.
No. 8, par 3, 219 yards
Tiger's tee shot finds the green, the front, 40 feet from the flag. His birdie putt runs 4 feet past. Another challenge for Tiger, who is not at the top of his game. The par putt falls without incident. 3 over (1 over overall)
The other two leaders, Tony Finau and Jon Rahm, have begun their round.
No. 7, par 4, 333 yards
Tiger chooses not to go for the green off the tee, so he lands his driver comfortably in the fairway, Inside 100 yards. Wedge to the green. Nothing special on the approach, leaving 20 feet beyond the hole for birdie. His birdie putt also is nothing special, leaving 3 feet for par. The par putt is not a good one ... Tiger rams it off the hole and out. Bogey. 3 over (1 over overall)
Meanwhile, one of the leaders, Henrink Stenson, has begun his final round.
No. 6, par 5, 595 yards
Tiger's tee shot, with driver, misses the fairway to the right, skidding into a waste area. He probably can't get there in two, but he will attempt it anyway. Woods, with 5-wood and the ball well below his feet, mishits it out of the sand. He topped it! It comes out low and skids into another waste area. His third rolls to the fringe at the back of the green. His chip hops left and 3 feet past the hole.
He makes the putt, but it's another par-5 wasted. 2 over (even par overall)
No. 5, par 3, 165 yards
Woods' tee shot is terrific, middle of the green, 20 feet right of the flag. Won't be an easy birdie putt, but at least it's a birdie putt. Tiger hits a good one, but it slides 2 feet past on the right. No-worries par. 2 over (even par overall)
No. 4, par 4, 489 yards
Another good tee shot, another disappointing approach. Woods misses the green short and to the left. He putts from there with his third shot, leaving it 5 feet short, and the par putt is true. 2 over (even par overall)
No. 3, par 5, 572 yards
The tee shot is long and true, splitting the fairway. The par-5 is playing downwind, so Woods has an iron in his hand ... 233 yards to the flag. His second with a 6-iron comes up short of the green, but he should be in OK shape to get up and down for birdie.
Whoops. Woods is too hard with his chip, and he goes over the green. Then he's too short with his comebacker, which rolls back off the fringe and into a sprinkler. He gets a drop from there.
This time, Woods hits a good chip and taps in for bogey. Not a good start. 2 over (even par overall)
No. 2, par 3, 175 yards
The tee shot is just short and right of the green, but the chip is a beauty. Tiger taps in for par. 1 over (1 under overall)
No. 1, par 4, 423 yards
Tee shot No. 1, with the driver, leaks a bit left into the rough. But it should not be any trouble. Or maybe it will. The rough did not look bad, but Woods doesn't get the cut he wants with his second shot, and he misses the green to the left. The chip ... mediocre at best ... leaving 10 feet for par. Not a great start. Bogey at 1. 1 over (1 under overall)
