Three Clemson players have failed drug tests ahead of the team's College Football Playoff game against Notre Dame, putting their availability for the Cotton Bowl in doubt.

Defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence, offensive lineman Zach Giella and tight end Braden Galloway were found to have traces of ostarine in their sample, coach Dabo Swinney announced Monday.

The school was notified of the positive tests last week.

"The letter that came from the NCAA said these three men had a sliver, a trace of some substance called ostarine," Swinney said at the first media availability ahead of Saturday's game.

"I have no idea what ostarine is but I have become almost an expert in it in the last three days. Plenty of stuff you can look at – I’d be willing to bet if they tested all of us right now there might be something in our system that we have no idea how it got there."

The players are awaiting the results from the B samples.

"I think the biggest thing is to make sure everyone understands – I’ve had guys fail drug tests before," Swinney said. "Usually when you say a guy fails a drug test, people write their own stories and have their own innuendos and own narratives. A lot of times those things are accurate. In this case, I think it’s important – very important – that he message is accurate and the truth is told because these are three great young men that I believe in and I’ve known, without a doubt, have not intentionally done anything to jeopardize their opportunity or this team."

Losing the presence of Lawrence would be a big blow to Clemson against Notre Dame. A first-team all-ACC performer , the junior is expected to be a possible first-round pick in the NFL draft in April. He registered 44 tackles and 7 1/2 tackles for loss in the regular season.
