The Hubble of China

The People's Republic of China is preparing for its space station that will have a docking module, Hubble type.

In July, Yang Liwei, director of the Office of Manned Space Engineering and the first Chinese astronaut, reported that the country was accelerating its calendar for a space station, whose core capsule would be launched in 2020.

In the Xinhuanet news site it was indicated that after the construction of the main parts, a capsule with an optical telescope would be sent to the same orbit LEO (low Earth orbit). The issue was addressed at the IAU General Assembly that takes place in Austria.

In the website of the Assembly, Daniel Fischer reports some details: the telescope will be 2 meters, along with a wide field camera and other instruments, in essence, another Hubble or - given that the field of vision is wider - a twin of the WFIRST telescope (Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope).
Meetings called Focus Meeting (FM) are held in the Assembly. On FM 13, Hu Zhan of the National Observatories of China, confirmed the launch of the telescope called CSS-OS, by China Space Station - Optical Survey, scheduled for 2024. The camera will be able to cover a square degree in a single shot. The team's primary task will be to probe 17500 square degrees with at least 6 filters that will cover lengths from 255nm to 1000nm, with a depth of 25.5 in magnitude. You will also get spectra without source slots up to the magnitude 20-21.

Comparison of CSSOS with other probes such as Euclid, LSST and WFIRST.

It should be added that the NASA WFIRST is scheduled for launch in 2020. China has gained space experience in the last decade. Recall that from 2011 to this year, they had the Tiangong-1 station, which finally dropped and fell in the Pacific.

China could become a major player in astronomy for decades to come.

Why is it said to be "a Hubble"?
Although the technical design CSS-OS is more comparable to the WFIRST that NASA is still doing, the comparison with Hubble is made for two reasons: First, the term "Hubble Telescope" has formed the general sense of "telescope" orbital". But the comparison makes specific sense because Hubble is a telescope that received "services" in 4 missions that allowed it to be repaired and improved.
In this case, the telescope would be launched in the same orbit as the Chinese space station under construction, with the possibility of being coupled to it to receive maintenance.
