SUN

It is one of the 200,000 million stars of our Galaxy. The Sun is about 27,000 light years from the galactic center. It was born 4,650 million years ago from a cloud of interstellar matter in a process that shaped the entire Solar System at the same time. It is in the middle of its stable life and within a similar time it will become a red giant and, later, a planetary nebula with a white dwarf inside it.

The Earth orbits around it at an average distance of about 150 million km. It is the only star whose surface we can study in detail, for being at this "small" distance. It is an ordinary star because of its size, mass, temperature ... and its luminous power has remained practically constant during the last 3,500 million years, enabling the appearance of life on Earth.

It generates energy through nuclear fusion reactions that transforms hydrogen into helium in its core at 15 million degrees, while on its surface (the disk we observe) the temperature is 6000 ° C.

The Sun is an active (magnetic) star and the number and intensity of magnetic phenomena (such as Sunspots that are intense magnetic concentrations observed in its visible surface or photo), varies every 11 years approximately, with the so-called solar cycle. The Sun has a significant influence on the Earth and is, really, the star of our life.

In Astronomy, the Sun is classified as a star of spectral type G2 and class of luminosity V (that is, "dwarf", or in other words, a star of the Main Sequence).
