Mika Brzezinski is walking back her words from Wednesday's "Morning Joe."

During that episode, the MSNBC co-host had slammed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for his remarks about the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi to Fox News. She suggested – in crude terms – that America's top diplomat was in thrall to Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the heir apparent to father King Salman's throne.

“I understand that Donald Trump doesn’t care,” Brzezinski, 51, began. “But why doesn’t Mike Pompeo care, right now? Are the pathetic deflections that we just heard, when he appeared on ‘Fox & Friends,’ is that a patriot speaking, or a wannabe dictator’s butt boy? I’m dead serious. I’m asking, Are these the words of a patriot?”

In response to writer/photographer G.E. Anderson, who advised her not to "equate homosexuality with Mike Pompeo carrying water for the murderous regime in Saudi Arabia," Brzezinski tweeted her remorse.

"Totally agree with you -SUPER BAD choice of words," she wrote. "I should have said 'water boy'... like for football teams or something like that..."

She added, "SO SORRY!"

According to the Associated Press, Brzezinski was absent from the MSNBC program Thursday, which a spokesperson for the network explained was a planned absence due to a family matter. The AP story also noted that her Pompeo remarks were not addressed on-air.

President Donald Trump, who holds Brzezinski and her co-host and husband, Joe Scarborough, in particularly poor regard, reiterated his belief that the press treats conservatives far more harshly than liberals when covering such incidents.

"If it was a Conservative that said what 'crazed' Mika Brzezinski stated on her show yesterday, using a certain horrible term, that person would be banned permanently from television," he tweeted Thursday.
