Jocelyn Bell Burnell and two Argentine astronomers honored
The astrophysicist who discovered the pulsars received the Breakthrough prize consisting of USD 3M. In addition, the Argentine Association of Astronomy delivered the Varsavsky and Sahade prizes.
Jocelyn Bell Burnell received the special Breakthrough prize in fundamental physics. This award can be given at any time and it had already been received by Stephen Hawking, CERN scientists who discovered the Higgs boson, and the LIGO collaboration that detected gravitational waves.Although in the announcement of the prize is not said explicitly, it has been conceived as unfair that Antony Hewish (together with Martin Ryle) received in 1974 the Nobel Prize in Physics without considering Jocelyn, his student.
Pulsars are rapidly rotating neutron stars. A neutron star is a very compact and dense object, which may be the size of a city, but with the mass of the Sun.
Yuri Milner, one of the founders of the Breakthrough award said: "Professor Bell Burnell deserves this recognition completely, her curiosity, diligent observations and rigorous analysis revealed one of the most interesting and mysterious objects in the Universe."
AWARDS TO TWO ARGENTINE ASTRONOMAS
The Argentine Association of Astronomy awards three prizes: Varsavsky, José Luis Sérsic and Sahade. The first two are biennials, the last every three years. In 2018 the Varsavsky prizes were awarded to the best Doctoral Thesis, and Sahade, to the trajectory, according to the Association.Varsavsky Prize 2018
The 2018 edition of the Carlos M. Varsavsky Prize for the best Doctoral Thesis in astronomy and astrophysics carried out in the country was awarded to Dr. María Paula Ronco.
The jury of the 2018 edition of the Varsavsky Prize, composed of Paula Benaglia (IAR), Juan José Clariá (OAC), and Jorge Federico González (ICATE), met to evaluate the theses presented. By unanimous decision, the jury decided to award this year's Varsavsky Prize to Dr. María Paula Ronco. The Argentine Association of Astronomy takes the opportunity to warmly thank the members of the jury for their professional and diligent performance, and to congratulate the winner of the Award.
According to the Diario Hoy (La plata): On his doctoral thesis, he pointed out, "Its objective was to study the planetary formation of diverse systems, mainly those that have characteristics similar to our solar system. The idea was to link in a self-consistent way, different stages of training that are generally studied separately and with different numerical tools. "
"We were interested in studying what are their characteristics and the mechanisms of water transport that occur throughout the evolution, and how the existence of gaseous giant planets can affect these mechanisms", he added.Sahade Award 2018
The 2018 edition of the Jorge Sahade Prize for the Trajectory was awarded to Dr. I. Félix Mirabel.
The Directive Commission of the Argentine Association of Astronomy has the satisfaction of awarding the 2018 Sahade Prize to the Career of Dr. I. Félix Mirabel.
Since his graduation as a Doctor in Astronomy at the UNLP in the 70s, Dr. Mirabel has developed an extensive and prolific career in the areas of Extragalactic Astronomy and High Energy. His scientific background is outstanding, having published more than 600 articles whose impact in these areas is evidenced by the more than 17,000 citations received. His research has led to notable advances in our science, including contributions to the discovery and / or understanding of ultraluminous infrared galaxies, tidal dwarf galaxies, the existence of apparently superluminal movements in the Milky Way, and microquasars, a field that the international community considers to be the founder.Dr. Mirabel was a CONICET researcher between 1974 and 1976, between 1985 and 1987, and from 1995 to the present. He has been a representative of the European Southern Observatory in Chile, and Director of its Science Office, and is a member of the National Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences. He has received distinctions from various institutions around the world, including the Doctorate Honoris Causa of the University of Barcelona. Dr. Mirabel has always demonstrated a strong commitment to the Argentine Astronomy, either through the training of students, the promotion of the exchange of national researchers with centers of excellence from abroad, or his tireless work in order to insert Argentina in first-rate international astronomical projects, such as the Cherenkov Telescope Array. Perhaps his most significant contribution to our community is the conception and political management of the Long Latin American Millimeter Array Project (LLAMA), of which he was a mentor, and whose promotion he dedicated more than a decade.
For all this, the Directive Commission of the Argentine Association of Astronomy considers that Dr. I. Felix Mirabel has enough merits to be awarded the Sahade Prize.
