Exoplanets ... Happy birthday!

This week we are planning: 20 years have passed since the discovery of the first exoplanet orbiting a star similar to the Sun. This discovery marked a milestone as it demonstrated the existence of other solar systems different from ours. That with what Giordano Bruno dreamed and that in the year 1600 led him to die at the stake became a reality on October 6, 1995.

And 20 years after that discovery, already we have more than 1,900 of these exoplanets discovered in our galaxy. The Kepler space observatory has been the tool that more of these extrasolar planets has allowed us to discover, but we can not forget the HARPS instrument installed in the 3.6 meter telescope of the La Silla Observatory (Chile). They use the methods of traffic and radial speeds, respectively, two effective methods to find these bodies, but not the only ones.

The discovery of these bodies increases every month, and thanks to the advances in instrumentation, they are increasingly found more easily. They started as gaseous supergiant planets; Then, they discovered gaseous giants, smaller than the previous ones. And the big jump came when they began to detect the super-Earths, to finally reach the type-Earth. The latter are the most valuable because they allow us to find similarities with our planet and compare its characteristics to see the possibilities of finding life as we know it here.

From here, wish all the exoplanet seekers a happy anniversary and a fruitful search for these exciting bodies.
