Earth Hour 2012 ... "Turn off the Light and Light the Sky"

The Chilean Amateur Astronomical Community joins "Earth Hour" (LHP / Earth Hour). This is a global campaign that seeks the participation of corporations, cities, and all people to carry out the most important voluntary action in the world in the fight against climate change and the protection of the environment of our planet.

The idea is to promote the invitation to commit by modifying habits and behaviors that allow a better and responsible attitude towards the environment, through simple actions such as turn off non-essential lights and electrical appliances dispensable for one hour, as a sign of a commitment that demonstrates the concern of people around the world for climate change that affects our planet. Turning off the lights becomes a powerful symbol that has repercussion worldwide. This campaign aims to raise awareness and reflection on the health of our planet, and on the actions we can take to contribute to the reduction of impacts on nature. In this way, together with the symbolic action of turning off the light, thousands of people and organizations are expected to commit to simple long-term activities and permanent actions (for example using water and energy efficiently), helping to improve not only the quality of the environment, but also that of ourselves.

The World Conservation Organization WWF, is one of the independent conservation organizations with the most international experience.

of the sustainable use of natural resources.

This initiative is promoted by the WWF. It started as an action of a city, and today it is recognized as a powerful symbol of citizen manifestation in the face of climate change. It started 5 years ago in Sydney, Australia, and has become so widespread that in its latest version in March 2011, it achieved the participation of 1.8 billion people worldwide, in more than 5 thousand 200 cities in 135 countries.

Why do amateur astronomers and astronomy enthusiasts join this campaign? Under the premise "Turn off the Light and Light the Sky", we also work to promote the awareness of the importance of having darker skies that allow us to observe the benefits offered by the Universe that night after night is presented before our eyes, and that due to the excess of luminosity that today day exists in practically all the cities of the world, we can not appreciate and admire it The work of astronomical observation is hampered when it is done near cities that, unfortunately, do not have lighting systems that allow directing most of the light This excess of luminosity known as "light pollution" is the factor that negatively influences the observations of the sky, since it reduces the notoriety of the stars and other stars of the celestial sky. horizon, it is not possible to see practically any star, and it is for this same reason that the most important astronomical observatories The world must be built far away from towns and cities.
