We interview the actress Vanesa Romero for her debut as theater director
Interview with Vanesa Romero, who debuted as a theater director in "En un baño".
Next Friday, November 30, at the Luchana Theaters, Vanesa Romero shows her first work as a director in one of the six theater pieces that make up the play 'En un baño'.
A unique project that brings together the talents of 16 artists: six playwrights, six directors, two actresses and two actors.
A show with six stories differentiated with a single link: they all take place inside different bathrooms, where we can be direct witnesses of the most raw scenes, absurd, tender or shameless.
Nosotras.com has had the pleasure of being able to interview the actress, and to explain her experience in this new project.
It's your first job as a theater director. What motivated you to accept the challenge when they proposed it?
V: It caught my attention because They asked me about a project I had never seen before. A play where the main theme is the bathrooms, but there are 6 pieces written by 6 male playwrights and directed by 6 female directors.
I found it very interesting, because there are 6 men who write differently and we are 6 women who lead differently. Mixing the point of view that we have regarding their texts, that combination caught my attention.
Obviously the first thing I did was to inform myself a little, to see who was the cast, the texts and especially that of Jorge Naranjo, which is the one I was going to direct.
And when I read it, I liked it and I thought I had a challenge ahead. He had to even think about how he had written, with what intention. I have a lot of respect for the people who write, and more for a great one like the one who has won several awards. I like to approach the vision that the other person wants to give him, but without stopping doing it my way.
They say that you did not hesitate to accept and undertake the project, did you have in mind to do it at some point in your career or did you have the opportunity and decided to embark on this new experience?
V: This project has been the starting gun to something that I really do not know where it will take me, because as I always say, I lead from the most sincere and absolute humility. Who knows where life will bring me, I just know that this has been something very special and very nice for me, and that's good, It has been an opportunity to open a door to this part of the address, which was there in some way.
I had the intention to open it with two shorts that I have been writing this summer, but this has been advanced and it has been a first contact.
You assure that this experience has been exciting, what do you like most about this project? How have you lived?
V: It is a very enriching and beautiful experience. I had always been an actress, I had never been on the other side, and during all this process, working with the two actresses, Marta and Irene, who star in my piece, I learned a lot.
I have learned from them, I have learned more things as an actress and as a director. It is being a very special, enriching and beautiful trip.
I'm looking forward to tomorrow's premiere and see the pieces of the other directors, Why they are surprise for me! I have no idea how they are, I have to admit hahaha, I did not want to read anything because, well, I do a little like in the series, I always read my plot but I never read the rest.
I try not to know much so that later I get caught by surprise.
I imagine that you have learned a lot about this opportunity, and surely you have also discovered some facet of yourself that you did not know, is that so?
V: It's very nice when in the rehearsals the girls tell you that they love it and that it has been super special. They thank me for my involvement and for the fact that I was there, getting to know the details, looking for everything to be perfect. And, see how the boys arrive and they tell you that they would love it if there was a second part and that you directed them, well, it's very nice.
How has it been for the first time not to be the protagonist of the theatrical piece and to be the one who directed it? Have you felt nostalgic for not being in front of the stage?
V: No the truth is no. I felt nostalgic the moment I was in the rehearsals yesterday and I saw the theater. I thought, how is this? It's getting on there and having so many sensations, those nerves of the premiere.
But it is that the other part of direction is being so special, the feeling that you are somehow there, holding them to them. To give them confidence, giving them another type of support, another type of security. That part is very beautiful. I told my close people yesterday, that it is being something very enriching and, I never thought I would enjoy this project so much.
What feeling do you expect people to have tomorrow when the play opens?
V: Well I hope that people have a great time, but you never know, the premieres are a bit strange. Because well, especially the protagonists, when the play is released, they are more nervous. But as soon as they enjoy, which for me is the fundamental thing, it does not matter if in the rehearsals one thing has been marked and then another one comes out, what I want is that they enjoy.
Things happen very quickly, nothing will happen the premiere and then they will be there defending every Friday the piece. I will be there with my best energy and above all I want you to be calm. That the work we have done is great. I want them to shine, so that they also demonstrate the talent they have as actresses.
Now that you have practically touched all the fields (the cinema, the television, the theater ...) With which of them do you stay? Or, could not you just stay with one?
V: I can not choose, because I think I would be lame. I am a very restless person, and if something catches my attention because I like to experiment, learn new things every day.
I really like to write, interpret, create new projects ... then, choosing is impossible. Everything I like, and giving up something that I like, would be like losing a part of me.
What has it meant for you to take this step in your professional career?
V: Well, as I said before, it has been the starting signal towards the direction, I was there in some way, although I had intended to open it with my shorts. Later I will shoot my thing, which is not only writing it, it is a much longer process and when I start I will think, my mother, what comes next! Hahaha. But as I said it is a very enriching and special process for me.
What are your new projects? A part of the two shorts that you have already mentioned, something that you can anticipate?
V: I have yet to meet with my editor next week, because I took out the book "reflections of a blonde" and I should already be writing the second part. But it is true that in the end with the play and the theme of my shorts it has been a bit complicated to be able to write. And, I think that writing a book requires a high level of mental calm and concentration.
Next week I have meetings and I want to go back to the book again. And if it were possible to write the second book next year quietly and make a very special book. I know what I want, I know the concept and now it's just to write.
Thank you very much Vanesa, for your kindness and to lend us a while of your time. You're lovely.
