Voyager 2 Creeps Closer to the Edge of the Solar System

Going, go-nop, is still going, says NASA on its Voyager 2 probe, which according to the agency was approaching the edge of the solar system again beginning of October.

In a sentence Yesterday (November 14), NASA shared additional data from the probe that gives engineers an idea of where the spacecraft is currently in relation to the solar system.

The Voyager 2 probe, which was launched in 1977, passed in front of the gaseous giants of our solar system, which made this spacecraft the only device to collect detailed data about Uranus and Neptune. Then, completing its mission, Voyager 2 advanced towards the edge of our solar system.

The new data comes from an instrument called the low-energy telescope, which tracks the low-energy particles characteristic of our Solar system. Given the data Voyager 1Sent home during his 2012 farewell, the team hopes that those encounters with low-energy particles will almost disappear as the probe goes out, NASA said.

A graph shows how many heliospheric particles are hitting the Voyager 2 spacecraft. When the probe leaves the solar system, that count will be close to zero.

And in early November, the team noticed a sharp decrease in the number of particles found, but not until almost zero, where it will remain after it leaves our neighborhood. That means the spacecraft still has a long way to go before scientists can finally declare it free from its domestic solar system.

The new data is added to the first warning of Traveler The imminent output of 2, which came from the probe's high-energy telescope, which measures high-energy particles. These particles become more frequent as a spacecraft leaves the solar system.

The peak in energetic particles is a signature of the probe that gradually loses the protection of a bubble around our sun called the heliopause. That bubble is formed by the solar wind, a constant stream of charged particles that is born in the sun, accelerates rapidly in the atmosphere of the star and then moves throughout the solar system.

Because the strength of the sun decreases and grows, the precise location of that heliopause bubble is not constant, which causes it to determine when Voyager 2 finally makes its escape more difficult.

But even though Voyager 2 is investigating the far end of that solar wind current, a much newer NASA spacecraft has begun to investigate the place where the solar wind gets so much speed. That is the outer atmosphere of the sun, called the crown. From the agency Parker solar probe, which was launched in August, made its First Of the 24 planned sciences, the sun passes around the beginning of this month.
