USA UU Re-imposes strict restrictions on Iran, Tehran impacts & # 039; bullying & # 039;
WASHINGTON / DUBAI (Reuters) - The United States imposed strict sanctions on Iran's oil, banking and industrial sectors on Monday and threatened to take further steps to prevent Tehran from continuing its "proscription" policies, measures that the Islamic Republic has condemned as economic war and promised to challenge.
The measures are part of a broader effort by US President Donald Trump to curb Tehran's nuclear and missile programs and lessen the influence of the Islamic Republic in the Middle East, particularly its support for representatives in the Middle East. Syria, Yemen and Lebanon.
"The Iranian regime has a choice: it can make a 180 degree turn from its illegal course of action and act like a normal country, or it can see how its economy crumbles," the US Secretary of State told reporters. Mike Pompeo
"We hope a new agreement with Iran will be possible," he added. "Rest assured that Iran will never come close to getting a nuclear weapon in President Trump's watch," said Pompeo.
The measure restores and strengthens sanctions lifted under a 2015 international agreement on Iran's nuclear program from which Washington withdrew in May at Trump's behest.
In a statement, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the measure "should make it clear to the Iranian regime that they will face financial isolation and economic stagnation until their destabilizing behavior changes."
The sanctions point to Iran's vital oil industry, although major exemptions such as China and India were granted temporary exemptions. They also cover 50 Iranian banks and subsidiaries, more than 200 people and vessels in its maritime sector, Tehran's national airline, Iran Air, and more than 65 of its aircraft, according to the Treasury statement.
In reaction, a senior Iranian official who declined to be named said Tehran was not worried about sanctions and would not be pressured to change its policies.
"INTIMIDATION"
Earlier, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Iran would continue to sell its oil despite Washington's "economic war". Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that the "harassment" of the United States was counterproductive by making Washington more isolated, a reference to other world powers that oppose the initiative.
The European powers that continue to support the nuclear agreement said they opposed the new application of sanctions and that the major buyer of oil, China, regretted the measure.
The sanctions movement intensifies a Trump campaign to force Iran to limit its nuclear work and stop a missile program, as well as to end its support for the forces of power in Yemen, Syria, Lebanon and other parts of the Middle East .
Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, said in an interview with Fox Business Network that more sanctions would come, but did not give details.
Howard Mendelsohn, former deputy assistant secretary of intelligence and analysis of the US Treasury. The United States said the sanctions sent a harsh message that anyone dealing with Iran will face consequences, even if a company or individual is not sanctioned.
"This seems very disruptive," said Mendelsohn, client director of Kharon, a sanctions analysis and data firm. "It seems a very serious and very broad action aimed at the main sectors that are critical to the economic viability of Iran."
Switzerland said it was holding talks with the United States and Iran over the launch of a humanitarian payment channel to help keep food and drugs flowing to Tehran.
US sanctions allow trade in humanitarian goods such as food and pharmaceuticals, but measures imposed on banks and trade restrictions could make such items more expensive.
Pompeo said Washington granted exceptions to eight importers that allow them to continue buying Iranian oil temporarily. More than 20 nations had already reduced their oil imports from Iran, reducing purchases by more than 1 million barrels per day, he said.
The rulers of Iran dismissed the sidewalks. "Today the enemy (the United States) is targeting our economy ... the main objective of sanctions is our people," Rouhani said.
"ILLEGAL AND UNFAIR" PENALTIES
"The United States wanted to reduce Iran's oil sales to zero ... but we will continue to sell our oil ... to break the sanctions," Rouhani told economists, adding that the sanctions were illegal and unfair.
"This is an economic war against Iran (...) We are prepared to resist any pressure," Rouhani said.
The SWIFT financial messaging service based in Belgium said it is suspending access by some unspecified Iranian banks to its messaging system for the stability and integrity of the global financial system.
Trump announced in May that his government was withdrawing from what he called the "worst of all" agreement negotiated by the United States. The other parties to the agreement, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia, say they will not leave.
The agreement had seen most of the international economic and financial sanctions lifted against Iran in exchange for Tehran halting its nuclear activity in dispute under US surveillance.
The European Union, France, Germany and Britain said they regretted the decision of the United States and would seek to protect European companies that do legitimate business with Tehran.
Diplomats told Reuters last month that a new EU mechanism to facilitate payments for Iranian oil exports should be legally established before November 4, but will not be operational until early next year.

Oil prices rose when the sanctions went into effect, with the Brent international benchmark index rising by more than $ 1 to a session high of $ 73.92 per barrel. Crude futures in the United States were up nearly one percent at $ 63.85 a barrel.
Prices rose to near four-year highs in early October due to expectations that the imposition of sanctions would create a shortage of global supply. However, the news of the exemptions last week caused prices to fall, as the main buyers would continue to import Iranian oil.
Rouhani said that even without the exemptions, Iran could still sell its oil, the semi-official news agency Tasnim reported.
The restrictions come when the United States focuses on the congressional elections and the governorship of the United States on Tuesday. Campaigning in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Sunday, Trump said his "maximum pressure" against Iran was working.
"Iran is a very different country from what it was when I took office," he said.
"They wanted to seize the entire Middle East, at this moment they just want to survive."
To keep the agreement alive, the remaining parts of the Iran agreement are trying to maintain trade with Tehran, despite the skepticism that this is possible.

Defensores europeos de la privacidad dicen que el complejo proceso de licitación detrás de la publicidad conductual en línea amenaza la privacidad de los consumidores.
