United States attacks Russians and Ukrainians with sanctions on Crimea
On Thursday, the United States imposed sanctions on three Russian and Ukrainian people who said they were linked to human rights abuses in the Crimea, actions designed to avoid what Treasury officials said were Moscow's attempts to normalize relations with the Ukrainian enclave.
The United States also imposed sanctions on nine entities that, it said, participated in attempts to integrate Crimea into Russia.
Russian forces took the Crimean peninsula of Ukraine in 2014 and then formally annexed the territory, a move that the United States and most other nations have condemned as illegal.
The sanctioned persons include an official of the Russian Federal Security Service, who was accused of kidnapping a Crimean Tatar activist and of participating in his torture.
A senior security official was also sanctioned for the separatist government in eastern Ukraine that was established with Russian support and military support. The official was accused of using his position to harass members of Jehovah's Witness congregations.
The companies sanctioned included a property of the largest bank in Russia and is involved in investment projects in the Crimea.
"The Treasury remains committed to attacking Russian-backed entities that seek to benefit from Russia's illegal annexation and occupation of Crimea," Sigal Mandelker, a senior official with the US Treasury Department, said in a statement. UU
"Our sanctions are a clear reminder that efforts to normalize investment and economic relations with those operating in the Crimea will not be tolerated and are subject to Sanctions authorities of the United States and the EU, "she added.
Officials of the Russian embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment.
The Trump government imposed sanctions in August in response to the poisoning of Sergei Skripal, a former Russian spy, and his daughter in Britain earlier this year. Earlier this week, the State Department told Congress that Russia had not shown that it had stopped using chemical or biological weapons, a determination that will result in additional sanctions.
