A Justice Department investigation into the scrape by United Auto Workers leaders and Detroit auto executives is revealing embarrassing truths and has resulted in seven convictions for corruption and conspiracy. The revelations underscore the importance of the Labor reforms of the Republican Party in Michigan that Democrats and unions want to reverse.
The FBI's three-year investigation revealed that Fiat Chrysler executives channeled cash to UAW worker training centers in exchange for backing collective bargaining agreements. The union leaders used the cash to finance their luxurious retreats to Palm Springs, the expenses of condominiums and other valuables. A former vice president of the UAW received a $ 2,180 shotgun.
Government investigators are also investigating the use of union dues by workers. As reported by Detroit News this week, UAW leaders took advantage of the union strike fund to build a 1,885-square-foot cabin on Black Lake in Onaway, Michigan, for retired President Dennis Williams. The luxury amenities of the log cabin include a wine cooler and even a room hidden behind a bookshelf. Sweet.
The trick is that the UAW hired non-union contractors to save money. A spokesperson for the UAW says the union "always hires union members and hires union contractors when they are available," but the two union contractors who submitted offers in the booth presented estimates that the UAW considered too high. In other words, the union did not want to pay more for union work if that meant sacrificing the wine cooler.
Thanks to Michigan's right to work law that Republicans enacted in 2012, workers can choose to belong to the union and finance their top executives, though perhaps not for long. The candidate for democratic governance, Gretchen Whitmer, received the support of the UAW and is campaigning to repeal the law, which she calls an "assault on workers."
Ms. Whitmer also wants to restore the state wage law that required contractors to pay union-scale wages for public works. Republicans repealed the law in June to reduce the state's construction costs, and apparently not even the UAW believes in paying "current wages."
Gov. Rick Snyder and his Republican legislature have done the work of US government workers following the eight-year mess of Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm. Workers have benefited from the tax and labor reforms that have driven business investment. If Mrs. Whitmer wins and the Democrats invest in the state house, they expect an assault on the workers who pay their dues.
