WASHINGTON: President Trump is expected to sign a directive this week to formalize his plans to modernize the US asylum system. UU
Trump is expected to sign the directive on Friday morning, before leaving on a trip to Paris, administration officials said. Last week, Mr. Trump said he intends to sign a "comprehensive" executive order on the detention of detained migrants, including those who apply for asylum.
According to the directive, US officials will require asylum seekers to go to an entry point along the border and file an asylum application, which would prevent those who cross illegally. Currently, migrants who cross the border into the United States have up to a year to apply for asylum, regardless of how they got here.
The argument the administration is making is that this change will allow for safer and more orderly processing and better resource planning, one official said.
The officials, who have seen a draft of the directive, said that the intention is to implement the directive temporarily, although a period of time was not specified.
Mr. Trump said last week that he wants to keep undocumented immigrants held at the border in detention until their legal cases are heard, instead of allowing them to be released in the United States to wait for a hearing.
The new directive follows Mr. Trump's order to send thousands of US troops to support border control efforts. The president also said he would sign an executive order that would end citizenship by birth for children born in the United States. UU To illegal immigrants, a proposal that, according to legal scholars, would be unconstitutional.
Earlier this year, officials from the Department of Homeland Security publicly encouraged would-be asylum seekers to seek refuge at entry points, saying it was the only legal way to request asylum at the border. Since spring, foreigners usually have to wait days or weeks to cross the border at entry points to seek asylum.
Mr. Trump increased his immigration message in the days leading up to Tuesday's election, describing a caravan of Central American destitute immigrants heading north toward the US border as an "invasion."
With Democrats gaining control of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, immigration is now ready to be one of the biggest battles for the president. The Democrats are likely to reject their hard-line immigration policies and their plans for a border wall with Mexico.
"We need the wall," Trump said Wednesday during a press conference at the White House. "Many Democrats know we need the wall. And we're just going to have to see what happens. I mean, I'll be fighting for it. "
