Toyota is recalling a little more than 1 million vehicles worldwide because airbags could inflate without crashing or stop working if they exist.

The withdrawal covers around 17,000 Stem xA vehicles in the USA from 2004 to 2006. Also affected in Japan, Europe and other places are Isis, Avensis, Avensis Wagon, Allex, Ist, Wish, Corolla, Corolla Spacio, Corolla Verso, Corolla Fielder, Corolla Runx and Sienta. The vehicles were built from July 2002 to June 2015.

Toyota said on Thursday that an electrical short could damage the circuits. That could deactivate airbags and seat belt pretensioners or cause those systems to inadvertently deploy.

The distributors will replace the control unit of the airbag. The owners will be notified in December.

Toyota would not say if the problem caused accidents or injuries.
