Before Mars became a cold and dry world, the water once came and went gently on the surface of the planet, just as it does here on Earth. Now, scientists have identified the remnants of three different sets of these ancient lakes, some nearly 50 miles (77 kilometers) wide.

One class was formed directly by precipitation, one was fed by water moving through the Martian soil and the other was fed by rivers transporting water through the surface. All the beds of the lakes studied are in a region called Hellas Planitia, the basin left by an ancient and massive impact.

Many of these lake beds He reminded the authors of similar characteristics here on Earth. For example, a temporary lake looks like a feature in eastern Washington formed by a catastrophic flood. Another looks more like features along the Mississippi River, where water has flown for centuries. A lake full of sediment seems to mimic the salty lakes high up in the Andes, where it is permanently cold and dry. If the lakes were close enough to a source of heat, the authors wrote, they may even have been habitable.
