New York Mets minor league outfielder Tim Tebow is expected to start the 2019 season with the AAA Syracuse Class, a promotion for the former NFL quarterback. 
"That's a big step for him," said Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen. through NorthJersey.com, at GM meetings in Carlsbad, California, on Wednesday. "We are excited to bring him back to camp and, hopefully, after a trip to Syracuse, he will be able to prove to us and everyone in baseball that he can have an impact in the big leagues."
The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner batted .273 and had six homers and 36 RBIs in 84 games in 2018 for the AA Binghamton Class before an injury (a broken Hamate bone in his right hand) required surgery and cut his season in July. The 31-year-old hit .301 in June and was hitting .340 in July before the injury. 
"Timmy is not a guy you want to impose restrictions on," Wagenen said. "If he sees a block, he will work much harder to overcome what someone puts in. I believe in him."
"Given Hamate's injury last year, his momentum stopped, the goal is if he can improve on that in spring training and have a good start in Syracuse, then we'll evaluate (a major league spot) when he's ready "
Tebow signed with the Mets in late 2016, played in the Arizona Fall League and in 2017 he hit .226 with eight homers and 52 RBIs in 126 games in two Class A levels. He played in seven games for the Mets in the spring training this year, hitting .056 (1-for-18).
