Third of Americans consider themselves & # 039; flexitarian, & # 039; The survey finds that it is willing to adopt more plant-based diet options

One in three Americans is now considered a "flexitarian," according to new research.

A new study on the diet options of 2,000 Americans found that 38 percent admit to following more than one type of dietary lifestyle.

And a flexitarian diet, defined as someone who does not adhere to a specific eating style and can combine diets based on plants and meat, is now adopted by 31 percent of those studied.

And another 13 percent now subscribe to a specific dietary lifestyle, such as veganism, vegetarianism or paleo.

The study, conducted by OnePoll in conjunction with So Delicious Dairy Free, examined the eating habits of 2,000 Americans and found that nearly three in five (59 percent) eat plant-based foods at least once a day.

The research, initiated before World Vegan Day on November 1, saw how the average American studied his cooking techniques by eating four meals without meat per week.

More than half (52 percent) of Americans are currently trying to incorporate more plant-based foods into their daily lives. But that is not all. Americans are open to the idea of eating more plant-based foods. In fact, 18 percent have tried a vegetarian diet and 5 percent have tried a vegan diet.

On average, Americans reported that they will try a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle six times in their life, with an average stretch of 37 days of strict herbal meals.

The respondents, on average, consumed two vegan meals, two pescatarian meals, three vegetarian, three paleo, three gluten-free meals and three non-dairy meals in a typical week.

So, why do people choose to flex their diets in this way? Seven out of 10 Americans say they believe a flexing lifestyle allows them to eat healthier without feeling like they are depriving themselves of the foods they love.

Other reasons why Americans admit being flexitarians is that they believe it helps them feel better physically and mentally, and are a good example for their children.

That said, the respondents had some barriers that prevented them from eating even more plant-based foods, such as taste, not being satisfied, the quality / texture of the food, and an insufficient variety to choose from. But as the plant-based industry has continued to innovate, those barriers may be falling.

"Living and enjoying a plant-based lifestyle is easier than ever," said Lauren Start, senior brand manager at So Delicious. "As that interest continues to grow, so will the demand for delicious treats that align with these different feeding lifestyles."

And although three out of 10 Americans do not believe they can become full-time vegans, they do see themselves eating some plant-based foods a week.

In fact, people are willing to eliminate certain things from their diet. Forty-two percent of Americans say they are willing to cut meat from their diet and another 46 percent are willing to cut dairy products. Forty-six percent of Americans are willing to cut fish, while more than half (52 percent) say they can live without bread, the largest contributor to carbohydrate counting.

While 73 percent of Americans admit eating a variety of different foods, 13 percent can still eat a variety of foods but consciously cut certain things like meat, dairy and pork, among others.

Over the last five years, respondents say they have actually reduced the amount of meat and dairy products they consume. In fact, 37 percent say they have reduced the amount of meat they eat, while another 33 percent say they have reduced the amount of dairy products they eat.
