The psychological variables are decisive in the development of sexuality. A study carried out by a research team made up of staff from the University of Córdoba, the Maimónides Institute of Biomedical Research (IMIBIC) and the Reina Sofía University Hospital (Spain) reveals that the sexual dysfunction suffered by women who have survived cancer of breast is related to phobic anxiety, which, however, does not affect the sexual function of women without a prior history of cancer.
For women survivors of breast cancer, this type of anxiety can cause sexual relationships to be experienced as an unpleasant experience. These women have difficulties with excitement, lubrication, with orgasm and the satisfaction of a pleasurable experience such as the practice of sex.
Although there are other factors that affect sexual dysfunction in women who have undergone surgery for cancer, this study published recently in the journal Psycho-Oncology indicates that the psychological impact may be enough to cause a problem in the sexual behavior of women and You may lose the desire to maintain relationships and try to avoid them.
The researcher of the UCO, Ana Abril Requena, explains that "phobic anxiety is related in a consistent way with sexual alterations in this group of patients, which demonstrates the great weight of psychosocial factors on sexuality, making that in these cases sexual relations are lived as unpleasant experiences ". Although it is true that there are certain types of cancer that affect sexuality more than others, such as those related to reproductive organs, research reveals that, in the case of breast cancer, phobic anxiety is the main reason that causes lack of appetite. sexual. In this group of patients, there is less sexual activity and interest in sex and a worse perception of one's attractiveness or femininity.
April notes that the research findings "can be used to improve the prevention of these types of problems and to develop more specific interventions aimed at reducing the symptoms that negatively affect the quality of life of patients and their partners using, for example, behavioral therapy or relaxation methods. "
The study reveals another data related to the experience of women who have suffered from this disease and who escape from the symptoms or their side effects. And is that most women who have survived this condition "are not satisfied with the amount and quality of information provided by health personnel with regard to the side effects that the disease causes in sexuality after receiving the diagnosis and, above all, the treatment. The results of the investigation put in 79.3 percent the percentage of women who manifested in these terms.
To carry out the study, the researchers used questionnaires from two groups of women, one of whom was diagnosed with cancer and who had completed the treatment, and the other with no previous cancer history. . Each of the groups in the sample consisted of 30 people, with an average age of 55 years, most of them married and with a similar level of education in the two groups. Of the patients' team, the majority had received chemotherapy (76.7%), radiotherapy (73.3%), followed by hormone therapy (60%, 23.3%) and conservative surgery (50%).
This method allows to measure the different dimensions of anxiety with standardized questionnaires type ISRA-B (Inventory of Situations and Answers of Anxiety-Abbreviated) and the type IFSF for sexual function (Index of Sexual Feminine Function). The first one allows us to obtain information about the three anxiety systems (cognitive, physiological and motor) and about four specific anxiety traits (in situations of evaluation, interpersonal, phobic and everyday life). For its part, the second, the IFSF, evaluates six different domains: desire, excitement, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction and pain. (Photo: UCO)
