They identify a mushroom tree ahuehuete to produce a compound against breast cancer

Researchers and students of the National Technological Institute of Mexico (Tecnm), Celaya campus, and the Institute of Biology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) study endophytic fungi of the tree ahuehuete (Taxodium mucronatum) for the production of taxol, a compound that is used in drugs for the treatment of breast and uterine cancer.

The project is headed by the student of the doctorate in chemical engineering sciences of Tecnm in Celaya, Nadia Mendoza Landín, with the advice of the research professor of this institute, Eleazar Máximo Escamilla Silva, who explained that the objective is to open new possibilities for the production of taxol at the laboratory level, thus avoiding the immoderate felling of the trees from which the compound is extracted.

"We work in collaboration with the Chemistry Institute of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, under the direction of Dr. Guillermo Delgado Lamas. The first to study taxol were Canadian researchers, who identified it in a tree (Taxus globosa) that grows in Sierra Gorda, Hidalgo and Chiapas. They extract the taxol and use it as a base for the elaboration of a synthetic compound that is used for the treatment of breast cancer, since it stops its proliferation ". He warned that, unlike natural, synthetic taxol generates side effects in patients, so Canadian and Japanese researchers began cutting these trees in Mexico to take them to their countries.

"Given this, our proposal was to look for microorganisms in these trees that were able to produce taxol and thus avoid their felling. We went to the Sierra Gorda together with a group of researchers from the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (Cinvestav), led by Dr. Luis Bernardo Flores Cotera, and we brought some branches to isolate microorganisms that do produce taxol, in addition to analyzing other trees that could produce taxanes, such as the ahuehuete, where we identify interesting compounds -including taxol- in their branches and fruits ".

With the collaboration of Dr. Guillermo Delgado Lamas, from the Institute of Chemistry of the UNAM, the student Nadia Mendoza managed to isolate compounds in endophytic organisms present in the tree of ahuehuete, where taxol-generating fungi were found that are cultivating at a biotechnological level to avoid damage to trees.

"Of all the microorganisms we were able to isolate and identify the fungus that gives very good yields in the production of taxol. We are producing it at the laboratory level by fermentation. The student Nadia Mendoza went to make a stay with Dr. Delgado Lamas, where he could characterize taxol and other antioxidant compounds that are of great interest. "

He announced that the next stage of this project involves the purification of taxol and the performance of in vitro biological tests with antigens, as well as tests on rats.

"That implies a new collaboration, with Dr. Minerva Ramos, of the Autonomous University of Querétaro (UAQ). They have an innocuous rat bioterio. The idea is to induce cancer in some of them and then supply taxol in their diets, observe their effects and evaluate their morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics. The advances of this research will be presented at an international congress of chemistry and biochemistry that will be held in Rome, Italy, in November.
