The year of the asteroids
The year of the asteroids
Osiris-Rex, at the gates of Bennu.
2019 must be, with the permission of New Horizons, the year of the asteroids. Launched successively by Japan and the US, both probes share common goals, including bringing land samples of these small worlds. Their nature as authentic remains scarcely altered from the early days of the Solar System exert an irresistible attraction for astronomers, and for that reason both space agencies bet strong for them. Some efforts that are now giving their first results.
And so, while the Hayabusa 2 is already in full activity around Ryugu, deploying several rovers and preparing for the delicate operation of taking samples, his companion of the POT, the OSIRIS-REx You are starting your own adventure. There are still several weeks until the arrival, scheduled for December 3, but in its slow approach, in reality a pursuit of its objective in which little by little the distance is reduced, it is close enough to observe the asteroid Bennu, of about 500 meters in diameter, with some detail, allowing to reveal curious details as well as establishing with foresight its period of rotation.
It was this past November 2, and already only 200 Kilometers away, the PolyCam, one of the 3 cameras that make up its optical system, was observing the asteroid for 4 hours and 11 minutes, taking images of 2.5 milliseconds of exposure for every 10 degrees of rotation of Bennu. As a result we can see this small world rotating on itself, making more remarkable what for now is its most remarkable feature, a huge rock that rises clearly above the surrounding terrain, as if it were a small mountain. It will certainly be interesting to observe it more closely and in detail, trying to imagine how it ended there.
A new year is approaching, and together with MU69, it seems that the asteroids Ryugu Y Bennu will be
the great stars of this new space "season". The material
of which dreams are made, or rather, the material with which
the worlds that the dreamers inhabit were built, wait in
they.
The optical system of the OSIRIS-Rex consists of 3 cameras, each with its objectives. The one responsible for these observations is the PolyCam.
