Researchers from the Department of Physical and Analytical Chemistry of the Universitat Jaume I (UJI) (Spain) have participated in the design of semiconductor nanosheets with the extended color range to improve LCD and LED screens thanks to an international collaboration led by the University of Ghent The results of this research, which also involved the ICFO-Barcelona and the Italian Institute of Technology, have been published in the journal Nano Letters.

The professor of Physical Chemistry of the UJI Juan Ignacio Climente, researcher in this project, explains that these semiconductor structures for optical devices, until now, "offered intense and pure colors in the purple and green, but the emission in other colors was deficient. Through a synthetic innovation, this study has allowed to extend the optimal results to yellow, orange and red colors ».

The joint work of the Quantum Chemistry Group of the UJI, coordinated by Professor Juan Ignacio Climente, with the research group of Dr. Iwan Moreels and experts from other European universities, has allowed a significant advance in the development of semiconductor materials for optical devices. .

Specifically, from the Universitat Jaume I, in the words of Climente, "we have performed quantum mechanical calculations that show that the new colors of the emitted light are the result of the greater thickness of the nanosheets synthesized by our collaborators, and that offer new knowledge about the properties unique optics of these materials ». "The new synthetic route allows to extend the usual thicknesses (3.5-5.5 layers of atoms) to 8.5 layers", adds the professor.

The semiconductor nanosheets are destined to constitute the second generation of the so-called quantum dot displays, already present in the market, since they offer more pure and intense colors than the current technology for LCD or LED screens. In addition, these materials obtained thanks to nanotechnology are also under study for their application in laser devices and optical sensors.

The Quantum Chemistry Group of the School of Technology and Experimental Sciences of the Universitat Jaume I is specialized in the theoretical study of nanocrystals. Their researchers model these systems with the tools of quantum mechanics to understand and predict their physical behavior. Recently, this group demonstrated that the new semiconductor nanosheets synthesized in laboratories can improve the luminosity of LEDs, lasers and LCD screens of computers or televisions because they minimize energy losses compared to current semiconductor materials.
