The third European polar orbiting meteorological satellite is already in orbit



The third MetOp series satellite, MetOp-C, has been launched aboard a Soyuz rocket from the European Spaceport in French Guiana. Once in polar orbit, it will provide data for the weather forecast.



The rocket carrying the 4,083 kg weight of the MetOp-C satellite took off on November 7 at 00:47 GMT (01:47 CET). After about 60 minutes, the upper stage of the rocket put the MetOp-C satellite into orbit and contact was established through the Yatharagga land station (Australia).



MetOp-C is the latest addition to the MetOp family of satellites, after MetOp-A, launched in 2006, and MetOp-B, launched in 2012.



The MetOp satellites are developed by ESA under a cooperation agreement to form the space segment of the Eumetsat Polar System. This system constitutes the European contribution to the polar multi-orbit system shared with the US administration NOAA.



As Stéfane Carlier, head of ESO's MetOp project, explains: "MetOp satellites carry a series of sensors that measure temperature, humidity, trace gases, ozone and the speed of the wind in the ocean."

For his part, Josef Aschbacher, director of ESA's Earth Observation Programs, points out: "the MetOp program demonstrates the value of cooperation, something that has been achieved thanks to the joint work of ESA and Eumetsat".



"ESA has been in charge of designing, building and launching the satellites according to the requirements of Eumetsat. In addition, they transport instruments developed in Europe and the United States. "



"MetOp-A was the first European weather satellite to orbit the Earth from pole to pole, at an altitude of 800 km, in order to complement the long series of Meteosat missions that circumnavigate our planet at 36,000 km above the equator."



"Although it was planned that each new satellite will take precedence over its predecessor, thanks to its extraordinary quality, both MetOp-A and MetOp-B continue to operate at full capacity. With MetOp-C, the mission will continue in the form of a trisatelital constellation, further increasing the data available for the weather forecast. "



"MetOp-C is already in the hands of ESA's flight operations team in Germany to carry out the early phase of three-day orbital operations, before the flight operations are transferred to Eumetsat."



Alain Ratier, CEO of Eumetsat, adds: "Eumetsat thanks Arianespace for this launch, which is a new success after the launches of MetOp-A and MetOp-B".



"We are now ready to take over the operations from the European Flight Operations Center of ESA and carry out the commissioning in orbit of the satellite and its instruments before the end of January, in collaboration with the ESA, the CNES and the NOAA Afterwards, the Eumetsat scientists will validate the final products with expert users, so that we can launch the products in real time for users in the spring of 2019. "



"With three MetOp satellites operating in orbit, the Polar System of Eumetsat will continue to improve weather forecasts up to ten days in advance, for the benefit of European citizens and our economy."
