Two Christian filmmakers appeared before the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Paul on Tuesday to challenge Minnesota state law, which they say forces them to produce and create films that express messages that contradict their core beliefs.

The owners of Telescope Media Group, Carl and Angel Larsen, have already been threatened with heavy fines and up to 90 days in prison if they decide to ignore the law.

The couple is being represented by the Alliance that defends freedom (ADF).

The Larsens want to enter the wedding industry. However, the state Human Rights Law stipulates that if the couple creates films that celebrate their Christian beliefs about marriage, that marriage is between a man and a woman, they should also create films about marriage that violate their beliefs, including the movies that promote marriages between people of the same sex.

"The government should not threaten filmmakers with fines and prison sentences to force them to create films that violate their beliefs," ADF senior advisor Jeremy Tedesco said in a press release.

"Carl and Angel are storytellers: they write scripts, stage, conduct interviews, capture images, select music, edit and more, all to tell compelling stories through films that promote their religious beliefs."

"The US Supreme Court ruled 7-2 in Masterpiece that the government should respect the belief, held by countless Americans from all walks of life, that marriage is between a man and a woman," he continued.

"The 8th circuit must reinstate Larsens' demand and order the state to stop forcing the larsens to talk about the marriage that violates their beliefs."

In 2017, the Larsens tried to challenge the law as unconstitutional, but a lower court dismissed their case and ordered them to serve same-sex weddings or to close this part of their business. Now they are appealing to the Court of the 8th Circuit.

According to the ADF, Minnesota officials have repeatedly stated that private companies such as Larsens violate the law if they refuse to create films promoting same-sex weddings.

Penalties for violations include the payment of a civil penalty to the state; triple compensatory damages; punitive damages of up to $ 25,000; a criminal penalty of up to $ 1,000; and even up to 90 days in jail.
