NASA's Parker spacecraft is now in possession of the record of maximum proximity to the Sun from an object made by humans. The ship has achieved this record by approaching only 42.73 million kilometers from the surface of the Sun.
The previous record of closest approach to the Sun was held by the German-American ship Helios 2, from April 1976.
As Parker's mission progresses, the vehicle will one after another surpass its own records, until its adventure ends with a final approach to little more than 6 million kilometers of the surface of the Sun, which is expected to happen in 2024 .
As Andy Driesman of the Applied Physics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University in Laurel, Maryland, United States, and member of the mission's scientific team, points out, only 78 days have passed since Parker left Earth, and It has already come closer to our star than any other spacecraft in history.
A thick heat-insulating shield will keep the Parker's instruments at a low enough temperature that they can function properly despite the sun's proximity to the ship. (Image: NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio / Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory)
The Parker team of scientists and engineers periodically measure the precise speed and position of the spacecraft using the Deep Space Network, or DSN, from NASA. The antennas of this network send a signal to the ship, which then retransmits it back to the network, which allows the mission team to determine the Parker's speed and position from the transit time of the signal and from the other of its characteristics.
The Parker is about to reach its first perihelion, that is, the point of its orbit closest to the Sun. The ship will face brutal conditions of radiation and heat, while providing humanity with observations of an unprecedented star and will contribute to solve mysteries about phenomena of solar and stellar physics in general that have baffled scientists for decades.
