After three years cartographing in a technologically advanced way the Black Sea bed, an international team of scientists has confirmed that a wreck that remains in very good condition dates from 400 BC. C.



Using highly advanced technology, available only routinely for renewable energy companies and oil and gas companies, scientists from the Black Sea Maritime Archaeological Project (Black Sea MAP) examined more than 2000 square kilometers of seabed. .



There are more than 60 wrecks found in the course of project research, and with very different ages. For example, a seventeenth-century Cossack raid fleet was found, Roman ships dedicated to commerce and amphoras on board, and a full ship of the classical period.



It was during the most recent phase of the project, at the end of 2017, when the team of Jon Adams, of the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom, Lyudmil Vagalinsky of the National Institute of Archeology and Museum of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and Kalin Dimitrov , from the Underwater Archeology Center of Sozopol, Bulgaria, discovered what has been confirmed as the oldest intact wreck in the world. It is a Greek commercial vessel previously seen only in ancient Greek ceramics, such as the "Vase of the Sirens" of the British Museum.

The ship is more than 2 kilometers deep in the Black Sea, where the water is anoxic (without oxygen), which allows to conserve the organic material for thousands of years. A small fragment of the ship was dated through the carbon method and has been confirmed to be the oldest intact wreck known to mankind.



"A classic world ship, which has survived intact, submerged more than 2 kilometers, is something I would never have believed possible," confesses Adams. "This will change our knowledge about boat building and navigation in the ancient world."
