The Mediterranean diet is also associated with psychological well-being
In recent years, multiple investigations have linked better cardiovascular functioning with the Mediterranean diet, which is characterized by a high consumption of fruits, vegetables, legumes, cereals and nuts, a moderate consumption of dairy products, fish, poultry and eggs, and low consumption of red and processed meats.
Now, a work published in the journal Psychology and Health has shown that adherence to this eating pattern also has a positive relationship with psychological well-being.
The study was conducted by researchers from the Faculty of Medicine of the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM), in collaboration with the Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Deu (PSSJD) of Barcelona, belonging to the Center for Biomedical Research in Mental Health Network (CIBERSAM) ) (Spain), and included 2,397 participants from all Spanish territory interviewed in the framework of the Age with Health project.
The results show that those with greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet also have greater satisfaction with life, and experience fewer negative emotions, both components of the so-called psychological or subjective well-being.

"To arrive at this conclusion we isolate the effect of many variables that could be responsible for these relationships, such as age, sex, socioeconomic factors, health status, level of physical activity, tobacco consumption or even presence of depression throughout the life ", says Darío Moreno-Agostino, a psychologist from the UAM and first signatory of the work.
"Even so, our findings do not allow us to affirm that adherence to the Mediterranean diet is the one that causes beneficial effects on psychological well-being. There may be other factors involved in this relationship, and future studies may delve into it, "concludes the researcher. (Source: UAM)
