The list of the best protected areas in the world adds 15 new sites

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) created its green list in 2014 to measure the effectiveness of protected areas, reward the best sites and serve as an incentive to improve management. Places such as the Doñana National Park or the Sierra Nevada in Spain were awarded in 2014, a recognition that demonstrates the effectiveness of their governance.

Now, during the celebration of the United Nations Conference on Biodiversity held in Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt until November 29, the list has been updated with 15 new natural spaces in Egypt, United Arab Emirates, France, Jordan, Kenya , Lebanon, Mexico and Peru.

"If we take global objectives seriously to reverse the loss of biodiversity, we must ensure that the world's protected areas do what they say they do: provide the much-needed protection for biodiversity," says Inger Andersen, Director General of IUCN. .

The IUCN Green List also helps measure and accelerate progress towards Goal Aichi 11, a UN biodiversity goal that aims to protect, effectively conserve and manage 17% of the areas in a fair manner. terrestrial and 10% of marine areas by 2020.

France, with 10 sites on the list - five of them added in 2018 - is the country with the largest number of sites on the IUCN Green List: from small areas near cities to vast marine reserves. In the natural reserve of the French Southern Lands near Antarctica - recently added - the management manages to keep access and human activities under control, despite the enormous size of the site (2.2 million hectares).

Thus, threats such as illegal fishing and invasive species are monitored and limited. The site is important for scientific research and also for commercially viable fish species.

Two of the aggregate sites are in Egypt, such as the Ras Mohammed National Park, a marine area near Sharm El Sheik which, thanks to effective conservation, boasts coral reefs with a live coral coverage of 90%, compared to the average of 30-40% in the case of the unprotected reefs of the Red Sea.

"Egypt is very proud that two of its most beloved natural areas have been recognized today as two of the most effectively managed and most justly governed sites in the world," said Yasmin Fouad, Egypt's environment minister.

In the Al Shouf Cedar Reserve in Lebanon, the endangered species of Lebanon cedar, a cultural symbol of the country, is thriving thanks to restoration and conservation projects. The management of the reserve has been successfully adapted to the current influx of refugees from neighboring Syria, some of whom are involved in conservation work. The reserve also contributes to the local economy by providing resources that are used for traditional products and organic foods.

In the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve of Peru, another site recently added to the green list, fair governance has led to improvements in management. Ten indigenous groups living around the park effectively conserve their ecosystems and help evaluate rare species, including the threatened Amarakaeri poison dart frog discovered in 2017.

Ecotourism and other sustainable activities, which have been developed through collaboration agreements, support the local economy. The park is located in one of the richest biodiversity areas in the world of the Amazon region.

Since its creation, some 33 countries have submitted nominations to the green list. In total, 250 sites have already offered to reach their standard. Countries such as Australia, Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, Malaysia and Madagascar, as well as the US state of California, have committed to submit proposals for the registration of more sites for the IUCN Green List in the near future.

California is prioritizing its 124 marine protected areas, while Europe is studying how to implement the standard across its network of protected areas, Natura 2000. China, which has six protected areas on the IUCN Green List, plans to submit proposals for registration for more sites. (Source: SINC)
