The legend of the Monterrey tunnel

The city of Monterrey, located in the state of Nuevo León, in the northeastern part of Mexico, is characterized as an industrial and cosmopolitan city, which venerates work as part of its particular culture. City founded 422 years ago by Sephardic Jews fleeing Catholic Spain and its Holy Office, who were looking for a place to form a new home in peace.

However, this city was not always at peace and was involved in several armed conflicts, including the famed Battle of Monterrey, which took place on September 21, where the Mexican armed forces, with the support of the heroic San Patricio Battalion, They fought against the invading US armed forces in the year 1946. Many legends emerged from this event that continue to be told to this day.

One of those legends is that of a great secret tunnel that connected the main buildings of the city, which were the Palace of the Bishopric, the Cathedral of Monterrey, the Government Palace and the Municipal Palace of Monterrey. It is said that this tunnel was built several years before the American invasion in 1846.

Over time many of these stories have become somewhat dismal, because they are surrounded by rumors of some hidden practices that were carried out in that tunnel. There are rumors that after that war, the tunnel was used for secret ritual practices, but it was also said that it was used to hide (discard) the alleged remains of sexual relations between some priests and nuns of that time.

Some years ago we investigated on this subject, and at the time the Director of Works of the I.N.A.H. in Nuevo León, Benjamín Valdez, he mentioned that the rock in Cerro del Obispado is a very solid sedimentary almond tree, so it would be very difficult to make a work of that monumental size, and the plans of it would be recorded in some document However, there is no document or document that refers to it.

We were even allowed to go down to the basement of the Palace of the Bishopric, where many ancient works of art are in the process of healing; However, despite the fact that we were given the freedom to inspect the place, we did not find any structure that could give the idea of being the entrance to a tunnel.

Some people have confused the old ditch of the Bishopric with the legendary tunnel, because it was large, and because this ditch reached the center of the city, but with the passage of time and the growth of the city was covered by concrete and asphalt , which gave rise to the legend of a tunnel. However, some ancient secret tunnels have been found in the downtown area of the city, specifically in the sector of the Old Quarter of Monterrey; There are even some records of tunnels between several houses, which left their ancient vestiges when the remodeling of some old houses, such as Casa del Campesino.

In the year of 1984 the Macroplaza de Monterrey was built, it was an extension of the old Plaza Zaragoza, a work that was criticized at the time, because many old houses in the center of the city were destroyed. Many remember the numerous buried bones found on Zaragoza Avenue, which at the time was said to be part of the old cemetery of the city.

What stands out are the testimonies of people who claimed to have seen or entered the tunnel. One of those people, whom we will keep in total anonymity because he is a prominent doctor in the town, mentioned that being a teenager, at the beginning of the 1970's, when the bishopric was abandoned, he entered the basement along with others. friends, and found a very deep tunnel.

He told us that they had flashlights for lighting, and that on the floor they found old coins and they even found an old carriage inside the tunnel, but what caught his attention was some small bones covered with sheets that were located on the banks of the river. tunnel. The doctor mentioned that out of fear they left and never returned, but that until he grew up and studied medicine he understood that these small bones could be babies or small children who were left there due to unknown circumstances.

Another person who witnessed the construction of the Macroplaza told us that along with the old Municipal Palace of Monterrey, during the remodeling, the masons found a large tunnel that connected to the palace. This person tells us that when the head of the work learned about the find, he immediately ordered that tunnel be filled with tape and concrete, forbidding any of the bricklayers to talk about it with anyone.

Today, the city of Monterrey has undergone major renovations, mainly due to the impact of Hurricane Gilberto in 1988, and later due to the great damage caused by Hurricane Alex in 2010. If there was a large secret tunnel in our city, very possibly it was already destroyed by all the renovations that were necessary to fix the city storm drainage.

And although there is no record or file that can confirm the existence of that great tunnel, its legend will continue to be part of the myths and legends of the city of the mountains, the sultana of the north, the mythical city of Monterrey.
