The kidnapping of Betty and Barney Hill - A case study

Although it was not the first case of extraterrestrial abduction, the Betty and Barney Hill encounter in September 1961 on a lonely road in New Hampshire is considered the first to grab the attention of a nation. And so pushing The issue of alien abduction in the international spotlight.. And although, like every claim of alien abduction, there are skeptics, many consider that the account, and the hills themselves, are beyond the genuine. Perhaps the fact that they were an interracial couple at a time when many parts of the United States were still very resistant to integration and equal rights for black and "minority" Americans would suggest that they were not seeking unnecessary attention. Especially the type that would paint them in a negative light. In short, it seems that they have very little to gain from making such claims.
The case would not only offer valuable information about the kidnapping phenomenon that would unfold in the coming decades, but there was also a memory of the Betty Hill star maps. Star maps that appear to be accurate and perhaps provide a clue as to where these apparent cosmic visitors come from. Or, at least, where he may have come from sometime. Due to Hill's opening, the result of a real desire to get to the bottom of the mysterious events, there is a wealth of information about the case, most of which now resides in the alma mater of Betty Hill, University of New Hampshire. And although they would not seek publicity in the media (although they would talk about their experiences if approached) they were particularly interested in sharing information with UFO groups and researchers. Again, actions that simply do not point to intentional deception.
Just south of Lancaster, New Hampshire
It was a little after 10:30 pm on the afternoon of 19th September 1961, when her husband and wife, Barney and Betty Hill, returned to their home in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, from Niagara Falls, where they had enjoyed a vacation. According to Betty, somewhere south of the city of Lancaster, she noticed a strange "lightpoint"On the move, first from under the moon and through what was Jupiter in the night sky." Barney, who was driving, continued on US Route 3. Leaving Betty to contemplate this strange aerial glow. She reasoned that it must be a shooting star or a comet, but when it moved vertically and then started to grow, she discarded this idea. She would persuade Barney to stop the vehicle, so that he could look more closely.
Realizing that his dog, Delsey, could probably take a walk, he stopped the car near a picnic area at the base of Twin Mountain. While Barney was walking with Delsey, Betty took a pair of binoculars from the car and examined the strange light in the front and forward. He almost gasped when he witnessed a ship "strangely" through his magnifying glasses. When this boat passed in front of the moon, it could clearly see lights of different colors, each of them flashing at different times on the outside of this strange vehicle. She called her husband and handed him the binoculars, asking him if he thought it was a "flying saucer" as his sister had said he had seen several years before.
Barney looked at him for a moment. I would insist that the object was simply a commercial aircraft. However, when the ship suddenly changed direction and headed towards its location, he would reevaluate this.
That "It was a plane that was not an airplane!"
In addition, this object moved with absolute alacrity. Later he would describe the object as "a plane that was not a plane".
The hills, along with his dog, quickly returned to the car. Both were now a little nervous. They would take the car on a lonely stretch of road to Franconia Notch. The object continued to follow them, and although it was still at a considerable distance, it approached them by the second. At that moment, the object was so close that Betty could see it spin as it moved. She would estimate that it would be about forty feet long. Sometimes, it would disappear behind the mountain ranges that lined the road before being visible again. Meanwhile, this strange blinking object would not make any sound. Then, after several minutes, the ship would suddenly descend directly in front of the Hills car in the middle of the road. Barney braked the brakes and stopped his vehicle.
Although it was still about 100 feet above the ground, the ship was so large that it filled the couples' field of vision. Even in this proximity, not a single sound came from this ship "in the form of a pancake." When he realized he had his gun in his pocket, Barney got out of the car nervously. With the same caution, he began to approach this strange giant of an object. From time to time, he would stop and take the binoculars to his eyes. He could make out a row of windows along the front of the ship. To his utter amazement, he could see between eight and eleven humanoid figures that were apparently looking out from these windows.
Then, apart from one that stayed in the crystal, the whole group of humanoid figures would move.
They're "Non-human"Y "They're going to capture us!"
From Barney's point of view, there seemed to be a panel on the back of the ship. It was here where all but the only entity in the window met. As in some kind of anticipation. This lonely entity dressed like the others in a "shiny black uniform" continued to look directly at Barney. Then, a voice appeared inside his mind. It would mean "stay where you are and keep looking".
Suddenly, an explosion of activity began to unravel. A large structure began to emerge from the bottom of the ship. At the same time, strange "red lights" connected to what seemed to be wings began to leave the huge object and began to descend towards the ground where it was standing. Later he would remember that it was at this point that he realized that these "beings were somehow not human". He turned and ran back to the car, shouting at Betty as he did "They're going to capture us."
Barney would turn the ignition key and fire the engine in action. By doing so, the object moved directly on his car. Barney pressed the accelerator and walked away as fast as he could. Betty turned around to see if she could see the frightening object. She would lower her passenger's window. As soon as she did, both she and Barney could hear strange and bewildering sounds of "beeps and buzzes." A strange sensation ran through each of their bodies, while the car seemed to "vibrate" in sympathy with the strange noises from outside.
Suddenly, each of them began to feel a strange "dullness" about their senses. Their minds and the concept of their environment were also dull. They had the feeling that they were not completely in control.
Lost miles and lost time!
Suddenly, the disturbing whistling and buzzing made the hills return to their senses. Barney's hands were still on the steering wheel of the car, but they had no idea where they were. They would later discover that they were about 35 miles south of their current location in the Ashland area. What was even more disconcerting, neither of them could remember how they had gotten here. The last memory they had was to lower the windows and the strange noises that filled their ears. The only solid memory that each of them had was to make a sudden turn in the road. There, they would meet with a barricade. And a "burning orb" in the middle of the road right in front of them.
Even more disturbing and confusing to each of them was the reason why, when they got home, it was just after sunrise. More than two hours later than they should have gotten there. Not only could they not remember more than thirty miles of their trip, but they could not remember a total of two hours. And this was simply the beginning of strange behaviors and memories that would plague the Hills in the next ten days until they finally sought the help of the UFO investigators.
Each of his watches had stopped working, for example. In fact, the clocks in question would never work again. Betty's dress was broken, and there was a strange pink powder on it. The leather strap on the binoculars that Barney was using to see the object was completely torn. However, he had no memory of how the damage had occurred. He also noticed how the toes of his shoes were scraped significantly, his best dress shoes. However, there were even stranger and darker behaviors.
Strange and confusing behavior
Even stranger was the need for each of the hills to repeatedly shower. As if they were "contaminated" in some way. Barney, although he would not find anything strange, had a constant need to control his genitals. It was as if some kind of injury I could not remember had happened there. Betty, meanwhile, was in a constant state of quiet anxiety. She would leave Hills' luggage, full, near the back door of the house. So, for reasons she did not understand, if they had to make a quick and sudden escape, the bags were ready to be thrown directly into the car outside.
The car itself would present more mysteries and questions. In the trunk, for example, there were several concentric circles, each of which shone brilliantly. Both Betty and Barney were convinced that they were not there before the strange trip home. Barney would notice that when he held a compass near the strange circles, the needle spun violently. As soon as he pulled the compass away, the needle settled down to normal.
As the days passed, with the couple increasingly confused and frustrated by the lack of memory of their experience, they tried to reconstruct their trip on the night in question. However, as soon as they reached the moment when Betty lowered the window and heard the strange beeps and buzzes, each of her memories would suddenly go blank. No matter how hard they tried, they just could not remember what happened next. It was as if a mental block was intentionally in place. Ultimately, due to this apparent mental block, the Hills experienced that they would continue to press for answers. This would eventually result in the disclosure of a hypnotic regression therapy. Maybe the first in a UFO case.
Initial reports to the military
By 21S t In September, two days after the sighting, Betty would contact the nearby Pease Air Force Base. Although she wanted to report on the incident, she was afraid that she would be mocked or labeled as "crazy". Because of this, she would initially retain certain details. However, the next day, Major Paul Henderson would contact The Hills and arrange a more detailed account. By 26th September, his findings were that the Hills had probably mistakenly identified the planet "Jupiter." Over the years, as numerous UFO investigations proceeded and widely concluded the authenticity of the Hills account, the army would change the misidentified object several times. Perhaps the most revealing of these was the conclusion of "insufficient data". However, the initial report will finally make its way to the army's UFO research group, the "Blue Book Project."
On the same date that Henderson would publish his findings on the Hills incident, Betty Hill, after reading a book about the UFO issue, would contact Commander Donald Keyhoe. She would relate the incident with as much detail as her memory would allow. She would also claim that both she and her husband, in their desperation to remember what had happened to them, were considering a hypnotic regression. This letter would eventually arrive with the UFO investigator, Walter Webb.
Webb would arrange to meet Betty and Barney Hill. The meeting took place on the 21st.S t October, about a month after the meeting. The interview would last six hours. Like the Hills, Webb would manifest his belief that an intentional "mental block" prevented them from remembering the encounter in its entirety. Although there was still much to be revealed, Webb's belief was that Betty and Barney Hill were "telling the truth". And the incident probably happened exactly as reported. "
Intense, frightening and revealing dreams
About ten days after the meeting, and even several weeks before Hills' meeting with Webb, Betty began to experience intense and frightening dreams. What is particularly strange about them, apart from their surreal and intense nature, is that they would continue for five nights in a row before suddenly stopping. She would never experience them again. Could this suggest some kind of "external control" and the "planting" of such dreams? Or could it be simply that once the subconscious mind has revised such strange memories to keep them forever?
In dreams, she and Barney would be walking through a forest somewhere near the now abandoned car. She was in front and Barney was behind her. Each one had one of the strange entities on either side of them. Each of these entities wore bright, dark uniforms and caps of similar colors. They were, as Barney had described seeing through binoculars. They were shorter than she and Barney, about five feet tall. However, his skin was a strange gray color and his eyes extremely dark.
He often remembered climbing a large ramp that extended from a huge disk-shaped object that towered over them. She and Barney would be separated. Interestingly, a figure that Betty often referred to as "the leader" would inform her that keeping them together would take longer to perform exams. I would remember walking around the room. In a moment she would pick up a book that had strange symbols on its pages. By asking, "the leader" would also produce a detailed star map that shows where they come from.
Then, there was a disagreement. The hills were taken back to his car. According to the leader, "the other men" wished they would not remember the incident.
Find a place within the UFO community
Although the eventual hypnotic regression sessions were still several years away, Betty, in particular, would suffer persistent ailments. Moments of anxiety that would emerge from nowhere. In addition to a sense of alertness that would force her to keep the full bags by the door of her house. Both Betty and Barney Hill conducted regular tours to the place where they witnessed the strange ship. They hoped that such visits could unlock their memories.
In November of 1962, more than a year after the meeting, the Hills met with Captain Ben Swett, who had spoken of hypnosis in the local church of the Hills. They would talk to him about their meeting and ask them if hypnosis could unlock their apparent hidden memories. Although he agreed that he could do it, Swett would say he was not qualified to perform such hypnosis on them. I would also warn against the use of charlatans or amateurs. However, it would remain close to the Hills in the coming years. Swett would prove to be a key figure in the configuration of the Hill hypnosis sessions.
While Betty was anxious to move forward with a hypnotic regression, Barney was not so sure. However, he believed that he would help his wife. It would seem that she was struggling a lot more than him to adapt to the strange and changing experience. In fact, initially it would give little credibility to your dreams.
Around this time, in the second half of 1963, Betty and Barney Hill would make several talks about their meeting in groups and local meetings of UFOs. In December of 1963, they would meet with Benjamin Simon. After several initial meetings, the 4th In January 1964, the first of the regression sessions would begin. They would last until June of that year.
The star map of Betty
The hypnotic regression sessions
Simon would perform all the hypnotic sessions in the hills privately and separately so as not to influence the other. Although Barney was initially indifferent to the sessions and to the meeting in general, Simon would suspect that this external attitude masked a deep concern he felt beneath. With this in mind, I would go back to Barney first.
The results were immediate. Remembering the strange entities through the binoculars and looking at them, there was real fear and terror in Barney. He would remember that he was so terrified during the encounter that he had kept his eyes closed for much of him.
He had claimed that after turning to run towards the car, the binocular strap had broken when it was ripped from his face. Barney could clearly remember moving away from the strange ship and seeing it in the distance behind them. Then, his memory became intriguing and disconcerting.
For reasons he did not know, he suddenly felt the need to take the car off the road and take it to the forest and to a "dirt road". I would drive along this quiet route for some time before "six men" appeared in the middle of the road. However, before he could stop the car, he stopped and stopped right in front of the group. Three of the men approached the car. In his mind, he could remember a voice telling him not to fear them. The leader of the men would tell Barney to "close your eyes". While doing this, I would remember that "I felt that my eyes had gotten into my eyes". I would claim that this look of men had a "fascinating effect".
"Those eyes! You are in my brain!"
As testimony to how terrifying Barney would find the strange eyes that these equally strange men had on his face, during hypnosis sessions, whenever the problem arose, he would cry things like "Those eyes are in my brain," and " all I see are those eyes ... they are just there. " Perhaps the most disconcerting, "they are only close-ups, pressing against my eyes".
As happened in Betty's dreams, he and Betty were led by a large catwalk that stretched from the huge disk-shaped ship. Once on board, his separation would come. At this stage, while lying on an examination table, Barney would keep his eyes closed tightly. Consequently, he would take much less detail than his wife. I would remember that a "cup-shaped device" was placed on his genitals that would retrieve a sperm sample. He would also feel the scraped skin of his arms, while they would look closely at his ears and mouth. A particularly interesting detail was the feeling that someone was placing their hands on their spine. He had the impression that they were counting the vertebrae.
In another detail similar to Betty, he would say that his language is nothing more than strange murmurs. However, at the same time, I could understand them in English when that language was addressed to him. Both would also remember that the mouths of the entities seemed not to move. Barney, specifically, would describe his communication method as "thought transfer". This is a minor but perhaps important detail. It is thought that this phrase was used as the idea of telepathy and what it was, was unknown to Barney. In short, it is perhaps a detail that lends credibility.

BettyThe sessions coincide with your dreams
Barney was taken to his car where he saw the boat leave. Many of Betty's regression memories would match those of her husband. In fact, many of his revelations would reflect those of his intense dreams of that strange five-day period that followed the episode.
She, as in her dream, left with the leader of the group. He would inspect under his arm pointing a large lens at him and taking skin samples. They would also remove samples of your ear, nails and hair. He would also remember a long needle inserted in his navel. The leader would inform her that this was a "pregnancy test" and was surprised by the pain that apparently caused Betty. Apparently, when the leader placed his hand over his eyes, the pain stopped immediately.
It was during these episodes in her regression sessions that Betty would become increasingly emotional and upset. During a particular session, I would be so distressed that Simon would end soon and get her out of hypnosis immediately.
Also, during Betty's hypnosis sessions, she would remember the star map of her dreams. During her examination, she had asked the entity where they came from. It was then that the leader produced a "three-dimensional" star map (probably holographic). According to Betty, the leader would tell her that the twelve bright spots were stars and that the lines connecting them were routes or directions from her star system to others.
While under hypnosis, Simon would suggest to Betty that when she left the session, she should draw this star map. She would do that. And, for some, it is another key piece of evidence regarding the authenticity of Hills' claims. Before that, however, watch Betty Hill's video talking below.

The connection of Zeta Reticuli and Marjorie Fish
Some researchers talk about the case as the "Zeta Reticuli Incident". And that's because of the aforementioned star map produced by Betty at Simon's suggestion.
What would turn out to be remarkable on Betty's star map is that it would look almost identical to the Zeta Reticuli system. Many UFO researchers claim that we were unaware of this stellar system at that time, and the discovery would come from this drawing. This is not completely true. The knowledge of the Zeta Reticuli, or at least its general location, dates back to the mid-1750s. And, obviously, it has always been visible before the Betty Hill draft. However, having said that, and despite Betty Hill's higher than average education, it is very unlikely that she, as someone without a passing interest in astronomy, would have been aware of it. Certainly not in the detail that she would describe it.
In 1966, after the extensive circulation of the sketch in "The Trip Interrupted", Marjorie Fish of Ohio, school teacher and amateur astronomer, would get in touch with Hills. It was his belief that the bright spots that Betty showed inside the ship in the holographic model could be paired with a real star system. He would embark on a project that would take six years to complete, and would lead to what is now known as "The fish model".
Before we look at that, however, the The Zeta Reticuli system has appeared several times in UFO and even in conspiracy reports. Perhaps most notably the Serpo project - An apparent program of exchange between the human and an alien race. As a side note, some claim that reptiles come from this system. Could that be why the word Serpo (serpent) masks this secret mission? Is there any connection with the apparently strange reptilian agenda?
The fish model
In 1972, three years after the unfortunate death of Barney Hill, and representing six years of work, Marjorie Fish would produce what is now known as "The Fish Model." She had produced more than twenty three-dimensional models that they looked for in star systems close to Earth at a distance of 65 million light years. He would also spend literally hundreds of hours searching and photographing the night skies. From these, she would see several star systems from various angles. Eventually, it would settle for the aforementioned Zeta Reticuli system. Even the most ardent skeptic had to admit that the similarities were remarkable.
What struck Fish as especially surprising was the fact that only this particular star system matched Betty's drawing. By her own admission, she had expected to find several possible candidates. The fact that there was only one overlap, for her, suggested that Betty and Barney's account, as they said, was probably accurate and genuine. Even stranger, Fish would suggest that it was thought that each of the twelve stars had planets around them that could potentially sustain life. In addition, all the stars in the region believed to contain planets that sustain life were included in the map.
If we assume that Betty's star map is accurate, and also that the Colinas captors were really extraterrestrials of this star system, it would also seem that there are at least twelve planets within this system that potentially sustain life. Could these planets harbor unique life to their respective environments? Or could the aliens involved with the Hills inhabit them all? Perhaps it is also shameful that Marjorie Fish does not receive recognition for the innovative achievement that it is.
The video below shows the connection that the Zeta Reticuli star system could have with one of the most famous cases of extraterrestrial abduction in history.

The gray alien - An authentic first encounter? Or a memory of a television show?
There is no doubt, at least for most, that the entities that Betty and Barney Hill described are what we would now call gray aliens or "The Grays." However, at that time, such a description was not automatic of these encounters with extraterrestrials. Does this, then, lend another portion of credibility to the Hills account? Some believe so, and we will see "The Grays" a little more soon. However, some skeptics would argue that an episode of "The Outer Limits" called "The Bellero Shield" aired about a fortnight before the apparent hijacking of Hills. One of the characters in the episode featured a bald, gray-skinned extraterrestrial. Many believe that this influenced, probably unbeknownst to them, the eventual perception of what they saw that September night in 1961. You can see a chart below.
As we mentioned in the opening, the interracial nature of Hills' relationship in the 50s and 60s is for some an indicator of authenticity. Why, the supporters of this argument ask, would they draw unwanted attention to themselves? Others, however, would claim that the fact that they were an interracial couple was an important factor in the incident. The general argument around this statement was that the couple would suffer a strange and unique hallucination due to the pressures of such a relationship in a country that, in some places, was still struggling with racial inequality.
Betty Hill herself would discard this idea. She would say that the couple did not receive animosity from their local community or their families. And, although the northeastern United States undoubtedly still had its problems with racism at that time, it was far from the deep segregation that still prevailed in the southern United States. Benjamín Simón also ruled out that his interracial marriage had any consequence of the incident.
The beginning of a more complete speculative image
While there is no doubt that the Hills would establish "the template" of the extraterrestrial abduction encounters, this charge against them and the encounters that would follow it is unfair in the best of cases. For example, there is no doubt that at least a small proportion of the many kidnapping claims that would occur over the years would have been "borrowed" from Hills. However, for the vast majority of the more authentic later accounts, the fact that they provide the same surely adds authenticity. For example, you can only describe what you see and / or remember. So, if we assume that the same extraterrestrial race is behind the increase in kidnappings from the 1960s onwards, it would make sense for people to describe the same entities, art and scenery.
Even accounts of alien abductions that have been recorded as they were before the encounter with Hills in 1961. The gray aliens only appear generally in the mid and late fifties. What we could consider another indicator of the authenticity of the supposed meeting of Eisenhower. Many encounters with apparent aliens before this are often of a mutual meeting nature. And many times they involve more humanoid aliens. Again, back to the connections with the Eisenhower meeting, there was an "other" apparent meeting with a different alien race. Although these are all speculative theories, many of them depend on assumptions and affirmations instead of facts, if there is any truth in them, a more complete image could begin to form.
Admittedly, Simon would concede the incident to be an extremely unique situation. Although one that resulted in a “singular psychological aberration”.
The Hills, however, would reject Simon’s ultimate conclusions. And while all three of them would agree that the sessions had ultimately worked (in that the gripping anxiety had since ceased), Betty and Barney Hill now felt sure that their encounter was one with visitors from another world. They didn’t, though, have an understanding of the reasons for their abduction. Or what it might mean in the “big picture” of everything.
Following the sessions, the Hills planned to return to their normal pre-sighting lives. However, freelance reporter, John Luttrell received a tape of a talk given by the Hills at some time in 1963. He would carry out further research on the pair and their encounter. On 26th October 1965, United Press International would pick up Luttrell’s story and shortly after most of the planet knew of their encounter.
The following year, the writer, John G. Fuller, would approach the Hills, along with Simon, and would eventually write the book ‘The Interrupted Journey’. The book would become a huge success. Along with the many details of their encounter, this book would contain Betty’s star map. A sketch that would, as we have seen, certainly pass the test of time. And perhaps may prove to be one of the key details of the incident.
Further Points Of Interest And Possible Connections
Might there be a genuine connection to the Zeta Reticuli system and secret missions like Project Serpo? Is it just coincidence that this particular mission, if we accept for a moment that it went ahead, occurred in 1964, just three years following the Hills encounter, and at a time when UFO sightings were rife and seemingly increasing by the year? Might such a mission – a decade after the alleged meeting with the Ebens and President Eisenhower – have been the reason for the dramatic increase in such sightings? It is worth reminding ourselves that, if the account is true, part of the agreement of that meeting was the authorized abduction of human citizens. Of which, the abductees would have no memory. Might this explain the line that Betty heard in her dreams that “the other men don’t want you to remember”? This apparently came after a “disagreement” of some kind.
Other controversial figure in the UFO community, Bob Lazar, also claims a connection between alien visitation and the Zeta Reticuli system. Among the many things that he would claim when first entering the public domain in the late-1980s were of top-secret documents that he had seen during his time working in the black-budget environment of the shadow government. These documents, according to Lazar, would state that extraterrestrials from Zeta Reticuli had not only been visiting Earth, they had been doing so for at least 10,000 years. Furthermore, they had an active hand in the history in the events of the Earth and humanity.
As a further point of interest, Lazar is another researcher that claims there is very much a joint alien-human secret project operating from various secret locations around the planet. Furthermore, this presence and these secret projects share a connection to the alien abduction phenomena.
Betty And Barney Hill – Credible Through And Through!
Were Betty and Barney Hill the unwilling victims of alien abduction? Or might they have been unknowing participants in some kind of top-secret military experiment? Or might the explanation be more dimensional or supernatural in nature? It is certainly a case that still, over fifty years later, is as layered as it is intriguing. And it is one, that despite the odd sceptic, many believe is genuine. At least in terms of the lack of falsehood on the Hills’ part. Their character is not in doubt.
Perhaps it is worth noting the number of respected people, in and out of the UFO community who speak repeatedly highly of Betty and Barney Hill. Just one of the many people to speak highly of the Hills might be nuclear physicist, Stanton T. Friedman, who has studied the UFO phenomenon extensively for some time. He would spend considerable time speaking in detail with the Hills. He would state that, “by no stretch of the imagination could anyone who knows them conclude that they were nuts”.
Incidentally, Barney Hill would pass away from a cerebral hemorrhage on 25th February 1969, aged only 46. His wife Betty would never remarry following her husband’s death. She would live until the age of 85 where she died from cancer on 17th October 2004. Whatever did happen to the Hills that night in New Hampshire in September 1961, it is an incident that remains open to investigation to future UFO researchers and investigators. Only through their future efforts will the Hills face vindication in their continued assertions of their experience. And at the same time, providing another key piece of the puzzle that is the UFO and alien question.
The video below looks a little further is this most fascinating incident.
