Productivity in the United States grew at an annual rate of 2.2 percent in the third quarter. It marks a slowdown from the previous quarter, but is still better than the weak gains seen during most of this nine-year expansion. Labor costs accelerated but still remained at a low level.
The Labor Department says that the increase in productivity in the period from July to September follows a 3 percent profit rate in the second quarter, which was the strongest increase in three years. Labor costs increased at a rate of 1.2 percent after having fallen at a rate of 1 percent in the second quarter.
Productivity, the amount of production per hour of work, has been weak during the current recovery. Analysts have not been able to find definitive reasons for the slowdown.
