The history of astronomy and of the knowledge of the sky is a long way that goes back to antiquity, in such a way that its study has experienced very different motivations and has supposed varied interpretations of the obtained data. Partly because of this, the celestial vault and the universe in general have been seen during all this time under very different conceptions, aligned with the tradition, the prevailing philosophy, religious beliefs or the genius of its researchers.



Marco Bersanelli, Italian astrophysicist and cosmologist, offers in his work a global vision of all these visions of the universe, starting from prehistory to the present, and covering in depth the great landmarks of astronomy, often related to the appearance and contributions of the great astronomers and physicists of history, such as Galileo, Newton or Einstein, who transformed that vision on several occasions, to configure the current astronomical theory of everything that surrounds us.



Little by little, we will share the essential discoveries that were shaping this science. We will know what the men of prehistory saw and how they interpreted it, the search for harmony in Greek cosmology, the religious influence and the dogmas, the finding of the first laws, driven by pioneers like Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler or Newton , and the formation of the great cosmological theories that have given meaning to what we contemplate in deep space.



All this thanks to the gradual appearance of new technical means, such as the telescope, and the advances in related sciences, such as physics or chemistry, that have contributed so much to astronomy.



The book contains 8 chapters that shed all the above. "The great spectacle of the sky", is certainly not an arid description of astronomical concepts, but a journey of discovery without pause, in which the reader will be able to learn and understand the circumstances by which each advance took place, the eight fundamental visions of the universe from antiquity to the present day. Naturally, in the last section, the author provides us with the bases of modern cosmology, that is, the keys of what we now know about the origin, evolution and future of the universe.



Each chapter also contains a section called "The universe in art", in which artistic works are presented, often in color, with their particular vision of the universe, depending on the time they were produced. The book is illustrated with these images and also with others that make it easier for the reader to understand what has been said. Nor is there a complete annotated bibliography that will allow us to choose new books to deepen the concepts presented in each chapter.



Written in a spirit of dissemination, not in vain the author is also numerous publications for the general public, will undoubtedly please the reader, both amateur history of astronomy and all those interested in science in general .
