The European service module arrives at the Kennedy Space Center
After a 24-hour trip from Bremen (Germany), with stops in Hamburg and Portsmouth (United States), the European Service Module arrived yesterday at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
This first service module is a key component that will take Orion around the Moon during the Exploration Mission 1. It will perform the high-power ignitions necessary to enter and exit the lunar orbit, as well as others of lesser power to facilitate the maneuvers and trajectory correction.
After years of design, construction and testing in Europe, the engine that will propel NASA's Orion spacecraft to the moon will soon join the rest of the spacecraft before undergoing the final pre-launch tests.
The European Service Module is a true European collaborative effort. The primary components have been built and integrated into Italy and Germany, while several European countries have supplied other minor components, including solar panels, from the Netherlands.
ESA's cooperation with NASA makes this European endeavor truly global in scope. For the first time, NASA will use a system built in Europe as a critical element to power a US spacecraft, thus extending the international cooperation of the International Space Station to deep space.

The confidence in European know-how is based on the success of the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV), which has delivered supplies with total reliability to the Space Station.
The legacy of ATV in terms of engineering and operations has been crucial in developing the European Service Module, as demonstrated by the hardware tested in flight, which includes auxiliary thrusters and pressurization tanks.
The next steps for the European Service Module are its unloading and unpacking. The integrity of the unit after the transatlantic flight will be checked and downloaded to the Operations and Exit (O & C) building of the Kennedy Space Center.
Some of the components of the European Service Module had already been shipped by sea in two containers and were awaiting the arrival of the shipment by air. These include the nozzle covers, the heat shield and the insulation layers, among others. The solar panels will arrive in February 2019.
Once in the O & C, the European Service Module will be integrated into the Crew Module Adapter (CMA) to form the Orion Service Module. This process will take time, since all the liquid and gas conduits must be welded and all electrical wiring must be connected. Next, the crew module will join the service module and the fully integrated ship will be transferred to the Plum Brook station at NASA's Glenn Research Center in Ohio for a 60-day testing campaign. The whole of the ship will undergo intense launching conditions in the largest vacuum chamber in the world.
Once the campaign is complete, the spacecraft will return to the Kennedy Space Center, where the Space Launch System (SLS) will be waiting for it, and will prepare for its first mission: an unmanned lunar orbit mission, which will demonstrate the capabilities of the spacecraft.
Work is under way on the second European Service Module, which will provide temperature, air and water control for the astronauts who will be flying in Orion's Exploration Mission 2.
ESA is immensely proud of its crucial role in the return of humanity to the Moon, thanks to the hard work and determination of the numerous teams committed to the European Service Module joining this new step back to the Moon. (Source: ESA)
