A team of scientists from the University of Malaga (UMA) (Spain) has revealed that the diversity of mammals is greater in the national parks of the north of the peninsula. Likewise, the experts have also detected that these figures, in comparison with those analyzed in 2002, reflect a decrease in favorable areas for mammals, that is, those where the environmental conditions are most suitable.

"This downward trend in national parks would have to be reassessed in the medium term, with updated data, since the reduction of favorable zones will have important implications for the conservation of mountain parks," warns the professor of Zoology Raimundo Real.

On the other hand, specialists have also analyzed the degree of representativeness of 37 vertebrate species in the National Parks Network.

Thus, they affirm that all species show a high value of "insecurity", which means that only a small proportion of their favorable areas are covered by a national park. Although, however, those that are represented, they do so with a high degree of favorability.

In this sense, they emphasize that the four species with higher indices are threatened. They are the Pyrenean frog, the black turtle, the snow ptarmigan and the common grouse.

"Currently, there are favorable zones in national parks with absent species, becoming places to be taken into account for future reintroductions or where species are expected to arrive naturally," explains the UMA professor.

The living beings are in continuous movement. Its geographical distribution is not fixed or static, so its study has been an uncertainty since always.

Researchers at the University of Malaga have used notions related to quantum physics to study the distribution of biodiversity, based on a mathematical function that predicts favorable zones of settlement for the species. (Source: University of Málaga)
