The ADENIUM project comes to an end after having successfully completed the technical activities scheduled at launch. In its two years, this R & D initiative has managed to select varieties of the flower known as desert rose (Adenium obesum) optimally adapted to Almerian conditions, as well as improving the final quality of the plant thanks to the study of each phase of the production process and the commercial and logistics stages. The company specialized in the production of ornamental plants, Plantal Producciones, has led this innovative project that has had the support of the CDTI (Spain) and the co-financing of the FEDER funds of the European Union.



Adenium obesum is an ornamental plant that is in great demand at European level but which, to date, was not cultivated in the Iberian Peninsula, only in certain regions of Africa and Asia. In response to this reality, ADENIUM aimed to promote the necessary research to make technically viable the sustainable cultivation of this species in the productive conditions of the Almeria area.



During its two years, it has been possible to design a procedure that, based on the varietal characteristics and its origin (seed or graft), has allowed to select the best variety of Adenium, the ideal substrate for its cultivation and optimal conditions for the rooting and viability of the plant. It has also managed to adapt the nutritional conditions and optimize the production system in its new greenhouses and lighting during the slow growth of the plant.

On the other hand, it has been possible to establish objective criteria for the selection of the new varieties of the desert rose according to the requirements of the European consumer. Some of these criteria are: the budding period of the flower and its useful life, its size and intensity of color, its resistance to pests, diseases and climatic changes, its attributes of homogeneity and compaction, the intrinsic resistance of the plant, deterioration factors during transport processes, etc. In addition, thanks to R & D, Plantal Producciones expects to create its own germplasm bank (mother plants) of Adenium biotypes, selected with specific external, morphological and structural characteristics, adapted to its production in Almeria and later commercialized in the European market. .



The programmed activities ended last summer, and in their development they had the collaboration of different companies specialized in the sector, such as Ejiturbas S.L.U. and the Dutch Delphi B.V. In addition, it is expected that ADENIUM has a tractor effect on other producing companies in the region, as well as for technological suppliers that have actively participated in the design and optimization of the agronomic process and in the implementation of the same material.
