NASA is moving forward with the assembly of its Orion Crew Capsule for the first large-scale test flight of the new system, thanks to a special delivery from the European Space Agency (ESA).

the European service module is responsible for the power, air and water of Orion's capsule, and now that the first module of this type arrived at the Kennedy Space Center of NASA in Florida, engineers can begin to connect the whole that will fly around the Moon in 2020.

"I wanted to go up and give him a welcome hug, but they did not let me do that," said Bill Hill, associate deputy administrator of NASA Exploration Systems Development, during a NASA press conference that announced the safe arrival of the service module.

NASA and the ESA engineers who traveled with the module have already confirmed that the segment did not suffer any damage during its trip across the Atlantic. Now, it's about integrating and testing, integrating and testing, over and over again until the ship is ready to fly, said Mark Kirasich, manager of NASA's Orion program, during the press conference.

The first connection will link the service module and the crew module adapter, which requires accurate alignment of the units and installation of 192 screws. "The alignment is a critical part of the process, it's taking a little longer," said Amy Marasia, who oversees the assembly of the crew module for the next flight, during the conference. "We are gathering two elements that were built on different sides of the ocean, so it is something that is expected."

Next, the couple will move to a clean room for welding, and then to a special chamber that can be filled with helium so that the team can check for leaks in those welds. The team will then install systems, such as the star tracker that helps astronauts calculate their location and make electrical connections throughout the unit.

All that before they even turn on the power switch, which is currently scheduled for January 2019. Once the meeting is completed, NASA staff will conduct extensive environmental tests on the modules joined in February and March.

Assuming all goes well, the crew capsule will be connected in May, at which time the whole travel to Ohio During more than two months of additional tests. When that process is completed, the package will be sent back to Florida for your flight 2020.

Although ESA has spent seven years designing and building this service module, it could not really drive a manned flight, as it does not meet the limit set by NASA for the amount of weight that ESA can cover. This is due to how the requirements for the module have changed over the years.

There is not an oxygen tank in the module, for example, which is fine, without astronauts breathing it. The next service module of the ESA, which will fly on the first Orion flight with crew, will transport that tank and include other design components that were not ready for this unit.

"We had to go on a diet, every day we had to go on a diet and, well, you know what happens with diets ... you make an effort for a few weeks and then something happens and you lose everything", Philippe Deloo, Manager of ESA programs for the European service module, he said during the press conference. "We have been on a diet for about seven years."
