Tagovailoa, No. 1 Alabama, passes the No. 4 LSU, 29-0

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa seemed tied by the reinforcement on his right knee when he galloped for a 44-yard touchdown.

He did not seem bewildered by the first interception he had thrown all season, responding minutes later with passes of 29 and 25 yards for a series of two-run touchdowns shortly before halftime.

Tagovailoa threw two touchdown passes to accompany his long career in what was supposed to be his toughest test of this season, the Alabama defense stifled the number 4 LSU, and Crimson Tide, the top ranked, remained undefeated with a victory by 29 -0 Saturday night.

Alabama (9-0, 6-0 SEC, No. 1 CFP) had no victories over a team currently ranked in the top 20 that enters the Valley of Death. But if there was any question about Tide's ability to handle a highly qualified team in a hostile ambient, have been answered outright.

"We really wanted to make a statement in this game, a lot of people talk about our calendar," said Alabama coach Nick Saban. "What better opportunity there is to make a statement than the circumstance in which we find ourselves."

Tagovailoa completed 25 of 42 passes for 295 yards and moved as well as he needed to, particularly when he ran into midfield or his long touchdown run in the third quarter to give Alabama a 22-0 lead.

Tagovailoa left the field after the play, briefly entered the medical store and rode a stationary bicycle on the sideline, but returned for the next series.

"I had seen the opening, I ran, I was just trying to get the first try," said Tagovailoa. "Once I passed 30, however, I felt my leg hurt and I was going to lose momentum after that."

Alabama led 16-0 at halftime and forced points on the first nine possessions of the Tigers. LSU (7-2, 4-2, No. 3 CFP) led Alabama 15 in its 10th series early in the fourth quarter, only to miss a field goal with 10:45 to play.

"Alabama beat us," said LSU coach Ed Orgeron. "When you protect the maximum and do everything you can with protection and they hit you, you have to look at the staff, you have to improve, I do not think it was a plan at all." ... There's nothing we can do about it. "

Tigers quarterback Joe Burrow completed 18 of 35 passes for 184 yards. He was supported five times and linebacker Mack Wilson intercepted a late pass in the end zone. The nose guard Quinnen Williams finished with 2 1/2 bags. Lineabckers Anfernee Jennings and Christian Miller each had one. Alabama kept the Tigers only 12 yards on the ground.

"It was crazy for us to rule them out," said Alabama linebacker Dylan Moses. "I did not expect it, but that was a goal for us to achieve it."

Alabama finished with a 576-196 lead in total yards by beating LSU for the eighth time in a row.

"We were not even close to them tonight," Orgeron said.

THE TAKEAWAY

Alabama: The best defense Alabama has faced this season was not good enough in its own field to prevent Tide from destroying it in eight plays over 20 yards, or covering an extension of two touchdowns with two touchdowns.

"It shows what kind of things we can do against anyone," Tagovailoa said.

LSU: The Tigers have had to shuffle their offensive line for much of the season, and they fought to physically match the Tide at the point of attack. Guard Garett Brumfield tried to return for the first time in four games, but had problems and was replaced intermittently by Chasen Hines to start the second half.

IMPLICATIONS OF THE SURVEY

While nothing changes for Alabama, LSU could fall considerably in the AP survey after being dominated at home.

STATISTICS STANDS

Damien Harris rushed for 107 yards on 19 carries, including his 1-yard TD run, for Alabama. Najee Harris won 83 yards on the ground, 29 yards on a carry.

Jerry Jeudy caught eight passes for 103 yards and Irv Smith Jr. had four receptions for 64 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown at the end of the first half.

"I was really pleased with the explosive moves we could make," Saban said.

Injuries

Henry Ruggs III caught four passes for 55 yards and scored the game's first touchdown, but injured his left leg at the end of the second quarter. Saban said that the radiographs were negative, but that the additional evaluation was pending.

THE TUA SHOOTER

Tagovailoa's interception came on a deep pitch down the middle, which Todd Harris Jr. dragged for his first career choice when he fell to the ground at LSU 4.

"That was a good play by the DB," said Tagovailoa. "I should never have made that decision."

The Tiger Stadium crowd burst, as it appeared that the turnover could cause LSU to drop halftime by no more than nine points, perhaps less, if the Tigers could move the ball.

But the response of the crimson tide was emphatic. Burrow was sacked within 1, and LSU had to take off shortly after.

Alabama recovered the ball in his 46 and Tagovailoa needed only two plays, a 29-yard pass to Jeudy, followed by his scoring hit to Smith, to extend Tide's lead.

UNTIL NEXT TIME

Alabama receives the state of Mississippi on Saturday.

LSU travels to Arkansas on Saturday.
