Spectacular increase in longevity in a type of electric battery


Metal-air batteries are one of the lightest and most compact types available, but they can have a great limitation: when they are not in use, they degrade rapidly, since corrosion renders their metal electrodes useless. Now, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in the US city of Cambridge, have found a way to substantially reduce this corrosion, making it possible for such batteries to have much longer lives without use.



Although standard lithium-ion rechargeable batteries only lose about 5 percent of their charge after one month of storage, they are too expensive, too bulky or too heavy for many applications. The batteries (not rechargeable) of aluminum-air are much less expensive and much more compact and light, but they can lose 80 percent of their load every month.



The design tested by the team of Brandon J. Hopkins, Yang Shao-Horn and Douglas P. Hart, overcomes the problem of corrosion in aluminum-air batteries by introducing an oily barrier between the aluminum electrode and the electrolyte, The fluid between the two electrodes corrodes the aluminum when the battery houses energy without supplying electricity. The oil is quickly extracted and replaced with electrolyte as soon as the battery is used. As a result, the energy loss is cut to just 0.02 percent per month, an improvement of more than a thousand times over the previous loss.
