More and more installations adopt management systems under the Industry 4.0 paradigm based on intelligence and efficient management issues. In particular, the appliances increasingly include more features that facilitate domestic routines: refrigerators that regulate their temperature or make predictions of missing food. However, what if, in addition to these functionalities, they were also able to measure the quality of the electrical power they receive? This would allow them to "self-diagnose" and know what has happened before a breakdown or foresee a future failure.

The research group of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering formed by Ricardo Medina, Manuel Alonso, Aurora Gil, Antonio Moreno and Eduardo Cañete has laid the foundations for the development of these improvements through the design and construction of a low cost sensor that It allows the measurement of the quality of the electric current in each device in order to implement these characteristics both in electrical appliances and in any device connected to the electric current. Without forgetting that this system can also be expanded to extra domestic environments such as industry or public lighting.

The revolutionary aspect of the investigation resides in two questions. On the one hand, the low cost of the sensor will allow appliance manufacturers to include these sensors in their devices, bringing the benefits to the majority of society. On the other hand, this sensor allows the instantaneous upload of the results of the individual measurements to the cloud, where the data is managed and accessible for the users. In this way, the process is streamlined and made more efficient.

The sensor has been developed from an integrated circuit that already existed in the market to which the auxiliary circuitry has been added that allows adapting the voltage and current waves. After adjusting internal parameters and calibrating the integrated circuit, it is able to review the measurements that a microcontroller then extracts, manages and uploads to the cloud in a kind of "preprocessing" of data that is then completed in the cloud.

The combination of the circuit and the microprocessor that has carried out this research group optimizes the process rather than programming everything in a microprocessor.

This work opens the doors to new applications focused on, not only measuring, but also acting on the load or giving a feedback to the device, which has at all times knowledge about the conditions of the voltage of the food to which they are subjected.

The progressive intelligence of household appliances will bring both comfort for users and certification of what has been the real problem before a device breakdown (if it depends on the quality of the load or a failure of the device itself) as a bet for the sustainability of the resources thanks to the prevention of faults based on the measured data.
