Shoot him! Bucks looking for franchise best start 8-0
On the first day of the preseason camp, the Milwaukee Bucks practice court presented squares on the floor made of blue tape at five approximately equidistant points just behind the 3-point arc. They marked the proper spacing in the offensive system of first-year coach Mike Budenholzer.
The players picked it up pretty fast.
The Bucks are the last undefeated team in the NBA with 7-0, tying a franchise record. The brand will be theirs only if they can beat the Boston Celtics on Thursday night at the TD Garden.
"It's a compliment for our team, it's a compliment for how hard we are playing and how we started the season," star striker Giannis Antetokounmpo said on Wednesday. "But we have to keep our heads down and keep improving."
The 124-109 victory on Monday over Toronto showed how far they have come in such a short time under Budenholzer.
The Raptors did not have the star Kawhi Leonard, who rested. But the Bucks played without Antetokounmpo, who missed the game because he was in the concussion protocol.
Not long ago, a game without everything that Antetokounmpo could have meant problems for Milwaukee.
There is no problem against Toronto.
The Bucks tied a franchise record for the second time in three games by hitting 19 3s. They have won six straight games by 10 or more points. They have scored at least 113 points in each victory.
An open look at the 3-point line probably means that a shot will go up. Defend the bow, and the Bucks will try to go to the hoop or kick an open man out of the dribble.
"They played with a lot of energy and speed," said Raptors coach Nick Nurse. "When we pressed, they would spin around and when they sat down they would back off."
So far, the Budenholzer system seems to be a good fit for a list of Bucks with a mix of athletes with long fins, such as the 6-foot and 11-foot Antetokounmpo, and 3-point shooters.
Guards like Malcolm Brogdon could fit in both categories.
"It's the movement of the ball and the movement of the player," Brogdon said Monday when asked why the system works.
"Everyone benefits from it, it allows us to use our intellectual coefficients," added Brogdon. "It helps us make scoring cuts to shoot many triples and shoot many good and easy shots."
Everyone is asked to fire the 3 - even the John Henson center. He has 5 of 13 attempts behind the goal this season, after only 1 of 13 combined in his first six seasons in Milwaukee.
"We do not want to take difficult disputed shots," Budenholzer said. "But if you're open, for the most part, we want you to record it ... but we can not forget to keep driving, creating rotations and aids, things like that."
The Bucks should have Antetokounmpo against the Celtics after he was allowed to return to practice on Wednesday. But they also have the valuable experience of beating a quality opponent without Antetokounmpo.
"Sometimes you can get stuck and look at Giannis," Budenholzer said. "The more we can keep moving, keeping the ball moving and playing together, including Giannis, is a good lesson."
