Scientists confirm that the Earth has two "hidden moons"
It's official: Earth has more than one moon in its orbit.
Kind of. National Geographic reports that a pair of clouds of particles ("dust balls", in essence) have been located in the orbit of the Earth at a distance approximately equal to that of the Moon itself. It was suspected that unusual formations already existed for decades, although this was recently confirmed by a team of Hungarian astronomers and physicists with the Eötvös Loránd University.
Located some 250,000 miles from Earth, these dust balls from outer space, known as "Kordylewski clouds," are approximately the same distance from Earth as the Moon, although they are much wider (up to nine times) than the Earth. Land.
Despite their size, they are apparently extremely difficult to find.
The clouds were first discovered in 1961 by the Polish astronomer Kazimierz Kordylewski, and are among a variety of other supposed natural objects or formations with the hypothesis that they accompany the moon in orbit around the Earth. Since Kordylewski's initial observation, the unusual clouds had not been confirmed by other observers; Some even doubted if they existed.
"It's interesting to confirm that our planet has pseudo dusty satellites in orbit with our lunar neighbor," study co-author Judit Slíz-Balogh told National Geographic.
In previous articles here in MUI have raised the strange story of previous searches for a hypothetical "second moon" In orbit around the earth. Although there has never been convincing evidence that such a feature has ever existed, generally known as "lunar", there have been some notable cases in which scientists thought they might be on the verge of such a discovery.
In fact, going back to the 1840s, Frederic Petit, then director of the Toulouse observatory, claimed to have seen a second moon in orbit around the Earth; A few decades later, the Canadian weather reporter E. Stone Wiggins made similar claims, which were published widely in periodicals at that time (you can read more about these initial searches for the second moon on Earth in my article here).
Clyde Tombaugh, the astronomer famous for his discovery of Pluto, was entrusted with the task of looking for a secondary object similar to the moon that orbits Earth from 1954, and concluded after a search of three years that could not be found such objects. Before Tombaugh's search for Earth's mysterious moon, Dr. Lincoln LaPaz had also made remarkable sightings of objects in orbit around Earth, claiming to have seen such a satellite before the launch of Sputnik 1 for Russia on October 4, 1957.
The alleged sightings of LaPaz and other mysterious orbital objects were the likely inspiration behind later claims by Commander Donald Keyhoe, arguably one of the most popular UFO defenders of his era. Keyhoe is later described in his book. Space aliens What seemed to be a reference to the La Paz sighting:
"During 1953, the AF began experimenting with new long-range radar equipment. When performing the initial tests, AF operators were surprised to pick up a gigantic object in orbit near the equator. Its speed was almost 18,000 miles per hour. The repeated controls showed that the follow-up was correct. A large unknown object surrounded the Earth, six hundred kilometers away.
Keyhoe and others who wrote about the apparent interest of the United States government in finding lunettes in the 1950s helped generate theories about a supposed "alien satellite" popularly known as the Satellite "Black Knight". The theories that appear online propose a series of outlandish theories about this supposed object, which include the claim that this "alien" satellite has orbited the Earth since approximately the end of the last Ice Age (I provide a complete breakdown of the story of the " in my article here, covering how a series of separate claims from the last decades were woven into a single UFO conspiracy theory over time).
In light of the latest discovery of these Kordylewski powder balls (I would not necessarily call them "moons", since they are nothing more than clouds of particles ... and certainly they are not genuine "moles"), however, it is interesting that additional orbital features have finally been confirmed along with the Earth's moon.
With a bit of luck, they will not prove to be problematic: as National Geographic As noted, these clouds naturally form around areas that result from the centripetal forces between objects such as Earth and the Sun "balancing" their gravitational forces, which are known as "Lagrange points". NASA has used these areas in the past as an efficient fuel. Parking for satellites, whose performance could be hampered if they are thrown into the mix with concentrated clouds of space dust.
The investigation of the Hungarian team was presented in Monthly notices from the Royal Astronomical Society.
