Samsung's new smartphone with a folding screen is 7.3 inches when it's open
, suffering a slide of device sales, revealed a smartphone with a folding screen that doubles as a book and opens to the size of a tablet.
At a developer exhibition event on Wednesday, Samsung said the phone, which is 7.3 inches when it opens, will be ready for mass production in the coming months. It has a second smaller screen on the outside, which is called the coverage window, which allows users to check emails and perform other basic tasks when they are closed.
Samsung, which distributes one in five phones worldwide, is considering a flashy device to help boost sales, as consumers keep their phones longer and lower-cost Chinese rivals gain strength. Last week, the world's largest smartphone maker reported its third quarter mobile earnings I had dived for a third.
Worldwide shipments of smartphones fell 8% during the three months ended September 30, the fourth consecutive quarter of falls, according to Strategy Analytics, which described the industry as "effectively in a recession." Shipments by Samsung, meanwhile, fell further to 13%.
The Wall Street Journal reported in July that Samsung was developing a folding screen device goal of a launch early next year.
While the final design is still being decided, the South Korean technology giant showed the folding screen, which he calls "Infinity Flex", with dimmed lights. Justin Denison, senior vice president of mobile product marketing at Samsung, demonstrated in a prototype how the phone could run three applications simultaneously when it opened.
"The Infinity Flex screen is the basis for tomorrow's smartphone," said Denison.
Folding screen phones are becoming a hotly contested race. At least four of Samsung's rivals, including
Apple
Inc.
and Huawei Technologies Co., have applied for patents for folding models. Last week, a small Chinese company, Royole, introduced the world's first folding screen device, which has a 7.8-inch screen. that can be bent 180 degrees.
The phone with a folding screen would shake the basic design of smartphones, which have maintained a similar appearance for more than a decade. But analysts say a folding device the size of a tablet could approach $ 2,000, so Samsung executives have acknowledged that they need to produce compelling uses to justify the high price.
The company based in Suwon, South Korea, has held talks with Netflix Inc. and YouTube, a unit of the Google parent company.
Alphabet
Inc.,
in how to optimize the content for a folding screen device, the Journal reported last week.
However, the market for folding phones projects that initially it will be small: Strategy Analytics expects that these phones will represent only 1% of all smartphones sold next year and 4% in 2023.
Samsung also unveiled plans to open Bixby, its homegrown virtual assistant, to third-party developers for the first time. I like it
Amazon.com
From Inc.
Alexa, Bixby needs external developers of voice applications to create functions, which Samsung calls "capsules", to popularize the technology. These capsules, which the newspaper reported last week, would allow users to give voice instructions to transmit music, order pizza or take a taxi.
The end of the career of virtual assistants, Bixby of Samsung enjoys an advantage over its rivals because the company sells more than 500 million televisions, telephones and appliances per year. The company has promised that all its devices will have Bixby by 2020.
"A new generation of technological advances has opened the doors at a pace we have never seen before," said D.J. Koh, the mobile boss of Samsung.
