Russian Internet trolls obsessed with Trump - and a canceled comedy show
But, did you know that they also like the Comedy Central game show @midnight with Chris Hardwick?
The improvisation program with Internet themes was broadcast in New York late at night and early in the morning, St. Petersburg time. Issues of trends in social networks were discussed and fans were encouraged to tweet funny phrases in response to a given message.

When the theme was #EarthDaySongs, a troll tweeted: "Stand by Your Manure". For #OlympicTV, another said: "Better Call Seoul".
Twitter Inc. recently launched the first full accounting of the activities of the The Russian organization aligned with the Kremlin called Internet Research Agency, who showed that the @midnight account was one of his favorites, mentioned more than 13,000 times, according to an analysis of the Wall Street Journal.
That's more than double the mentions through tweets and retweets that the Russian trolls gave to @HillaryClinton, an identifier they called almost 6,000 times, according to the Twitter data.
A troll sense of humor
The comedy show @midnight discussed trends on social media and encouraged fans to tweet fun phrases in response to a particular Twitter hashtag. Here are some of the Russian answers.

President Trump's Twitter account, @ realDonaldTrump, the English name they wrote the most, was mentioned 23,000 times.
While @midnight was on the air, it developed a loyal following, particularly among young men, and peaked with 485,000 viewers by the end of 2016. Comedy Central suspended it in 2017 because its performance was below.
The host, Mr. Hardwick, says he did not know that he had developed a fan base in St. Petersburg until he was contacted by the Journal.

It was not for lack of trying. One of the most popular tweets of the trolls was in response to the #RedneckAMovie message. The tweet "You all return to the future, have you heard?" They obtained more than 140 "likes". In the issue # MarriageAdviceIn3Words, the response "Order your fries", possibly a reference to spouses who do not like to share, was retweeted 174 times.
When asked for suggestions for #RichMovies, they wrote:

Many of the trolls' attempts at humor seemed to fail, perhaps because something was lost in the translation.

In response to the hashtag # CountryMusicIn5Words, a troll wrote "Exorcism is my part-time job".
Some publications seemed to be inside jokes. "Hi, I'm Putin," an account tweeted in early 2017. "Trump: from Russia, with love," said another person at almost the same time. For #BadMonsterMovies, another intervened: "Internet Trollhunter".
It is possible that the trolls have been hitting their stride when the show is nearing its end.
For one of the last episodes, which included a bit called #MakeTVShowsCanadian, the Russian trolls tweeted almost 200 times in the @midnight account.
Some of the entries included "Leave it to Bieber"; "The team Eh" and "The price is right .... About 80 cents on the dollar."

Social media researchers say that their tweets for the show @midnight may have been an effort to learn American culture and sharpen their mood.
"If it's going to be fun, you have to practice," said Ben Nimmo, who researches disinformation and online influence for the non-partisan think tank of the Atlantic Council. He also suspects that they may have been bored. "It's not very fun being a troll."
The tweets in the comedy show seemed to give them a small creative license, even if some of them approached the viral.
Perhaps there is not one more expert in Russian-American humor than Yakov Smirnoff, the comedian born in the Soviet Union who emigrated to the United States in the 1970s.
Mr. Smirnoff says that his career was successful with the end of the Cold War. After the Soviet Union collapsed, the host of the night, David Letterman, read a list of the top 10 things that would change, Smirnoff said.
"Number one on the list: Yakov Smirnoff will be out of work," he said. "I thought it was very funny, six months later, it was not funny."
At the request of the Journal, Mr. Smirnoff, 67, reviewed some of the trolls' attempts at humor.
"Nothing I see makes me leave, 'Ooooh, I wish I had thought about it,'" he said. To the trolls, he offered this advice: "Do not give up your daily work, whatever you do".
Comedy Central does not seem to have been aware of the popularity of the program in Russia.
"We knew of your interest because the technical team of @midnight was tracking and tracking the robots of St. Petersburg for years," quipped Kent Alterman, president of Comedy Central.
