Researchers from the University of Barcelona develop the first triple treatment for tuberculosis in liquid format
Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that affects mostly the lungs and is among the ten leading causes of death worldwide. Currently patients are treated with a combination of antibiotics in different tablets, a problematic form of administration for children and adults who have difficulty swallowing. The team of Dr. Josep Maria Suñé Negre, director of the Medicine Development Service (SDM) of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Barcelona (Catalunya, Spain), has managed to develop a new liquid formulation of the three drugs of first line for tuberculosis that adapts to this type of cases. The new liquid preparation improves the flavor of this type of formulation and solves stability problems, which helps this important group of patients to follow the treatment more easily.
In 2016, more than ten million new cases of tuberculosis were detected, of which one million in children. The recommended treatment for these people contains a combination of the antibiotics isoniazid, rifampicin and pyrazinamide. The usual formulation of this drug is in tablets that cause problems of adherence to treatment between children and some adults, due to the difficulty to swallow the tablets, to which two or three tablets should be taken in each administration and to the bad taste of the tablets . In addition, this situation of rejection can cause patients to take lower doses than recommended, or an excessive dose to compensate for those that have not been taken, which increases the probability of developing resistance to the antibiotics of this bacterium.
In cases like these, the hospital pharmacy services prepare specific master formulations of aqueous suspension of some of the active ingredients of the antituberculosis drugs, but they are preparations with significant stability problems and that must be taken immediately after they have been prepared. The researchers of the UB have developed a formula that solves this deficiency and that gives rise to a stable and effective liquid preparation with the exact dose of rifampin, isoniazid and pyrazinamide. In addition, the study of the manufacturing technology and the validation of the analytical methodology has also been carried out, so the new formula is already prepared to obtain a license agreement.
