Relationship between a low level of copper in the body and cells with more fat
An investigation reveals that low levels of cellular copper seem to fatten adipose cells, by altering how these cells process their main metabolic fuels, such as fat and sugar.
The finding has been made by examining mouse cells, the team of Svetlana Lutsenko and Haojun Yang, of the School of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, United States.
The authors of the study warn that although a link between copper and the degree of obesity in humans has already been reported, more research is needed to better understand the connection. In Western society, it is not usual to suffer from a dietary copper deficiency, except during pregnancy, with the main health risks associated with genetic disorders of copper imbalance. A diet that incorporates vegetables, nuts and even chocolate contains enough copper to maintain healthy levels of this element in the consumer.
Copper is essential for human biology and helps facilitate many processes, from the formation of pigments in the color of hair and eyes to the formation of new blood vessels. This mineral is also important for cognition. Imbalances in copper are associated with several neurological disorders, and altered levels of copper have been linked to depression and changes in sleep patterns.
