Psoriasis: causes and treatments







Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disease that accelerates the life cycle of skin cells.



This behavior causes the cells to accumulate rapidly on the surface of the skin, and the surpluses form scales and red spots that cause itching and often pain.

It is more frequent in people between 15 and 20 years old.

It is also a disease that manifests itself very differently in each individual and the classification is based on the shape and pattern of the scales.


The lesions can be located in different parts of the body. The most common is to find them on the trunk, on the entire back, on the extremities, and on the scalp.


It can affect areas such as armpits, genitals, navel, and under nails.




Diagnosis


It is done by observing the area where flaking and skin lesions appear.


As you move forward, doctors can easily recognize your characteristic desquamation pattern, so you do not need to have diagnostic tests.


Sometimes a biopsy of the skin is performed to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other pathologies.




Treatments


The treatments reduce inflammation and lighten the skin.


They can be divided into: topics, phototherapy, and systemic medications.



Topical


They usually recommend creams, lotions, cleansers, and ointments to apply in the area.



Phototherapy.


It is a very beneficial treatment for this type of patients.


Some may need a specific booster with ultraviolet light and medications.


Also known as photo chemotherapy, the medication is taken orally or injected to enhance the effects of UVA.



Systemic drugs.


They are for oral use, although injectables can also be used.

It is essential to maintain an adequate hygiene in the skin, to avoid the occurrence of infections that can cause injuries and a new outbreak of the disease.
