Predawn Antares Rocket Launch Friday Will Be Visible Along US East Coast
An Antares rocket will be launched from Wallops Island, Virginia, early Friday morning (November 16) and should be visible, weather permitting, from parts of the east coast.
When the weather is fine, those who live nearby and along the Atlantic coast and west of the Appalachians will have a great opportunity to see the two-stage rocket, developed by Northrop Grumman, carry cargo towards the international space station. The vessel will be launched from Pad 0A at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) located at NASA's Wallops flight facility. This flight (NG CRS-10) will be the 11th planned flight of the Cygnus spacecraft without refueling and the tenth flight of the ship to the International Space Station under a Commercial Replenishment Services contract with NASA. Previous flights were under the Orbital ATK brand, which was absorbed by Northrop Grumman on June 6.
To get to the space station, Antares must start when the rotation of the Earth brings the launch pad to the plane of the orbit of the station. For this next mission, that will happen at 4:23 a.m. EST (0923 GMT) on November 15. In addition to seeing the sky early in the morning, you can watch the online launch here at Space.comCourtesy of NASA TV.
The launch configuration of this mission is markedly different from the space station's replenishment missions launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida. These launches, originating in the "Space Coast" of the state, bring the road of the refueling cargo ship almost parallel to the East Coast of the United States. But in the case of Antares, the launch path will be to the southeast and on a course directly away from the continental United States.
The Cygnus spacecraft for this mission is called the S. John Young in honor of the former astronaut and officer of the United States Navy. As a NASA astronaut, Young recorded 835 hours in space participating in six missions: Gemini 3 and 10, Apollo 10 and 16, and STS-1 and 9.
What to expect
This NASA chart shows where and when to see the launch of the Antares rocket from Northrop Grumman from NASA's Wallops flight facility in Virginia on November 16, 2018. The rocket will launch a Cygnus spacecraft that will carry cargo to the Space Station International: the launch, at 4:23 am EST (0923 GMT), will be visible across much of the East Coast of the US. UU

Above, you can see a map provided by Northrop Grumman that shows the approximate time you can expect to see Antares for the first time after its launch. The diagram shows the time the rocket will reach 5 degrees above the horizon, which varies according to its location. (Five degrees is the cutoff point because it is unlikely that you can see the rocket when it is lower, due to buildings, vegetation and other terrain features.) As an example, the use of this map when viewed from New York shows that Antares will reach 5 degrees above the horizon approximately 150 seconds after launch (+150 sec).
Antares will be visible to most places by virtue of the light emanating from the first stage of the ship.
The first stage uses kerosene and liquid oxygen as propellants. Cygnus will go into orbit using the Antares 230 launch vehicle from Northrop Grumman, which has RD-181 engines. Antares must appear as a bright and moving star. Observers who use binoculars may also see a short stele. Because the first stage of Antares is liquid fuel, the ascent of the rocket is slower than that of the Minotaur solid fuel rockets that were launched from Wallops in recent years. Antares will lose its first stage once the component has spent all its fuel, approximately 3 1/2 minutes after launch. This stage will break harmlessly into the atmosphere and fall into the Atlantic Ocean.
Then, a coast phase arrives after the closing of the first stage.
The second stage is a solid fuel rocket, Castor 30. This second stage, together with the Cygnus spacecraft, is placed in a low Earth orbit. After separating from the second stage, Cygnus will use its own engines to continue its mission to the space station. The rocket, of course, will not return to Earth; It will continue its ascent, accelerating faster and faster into space.
Where to concentrate your look
South Carolina / Georgia / Florida: take off to stage 1, mainly towards the northeast.
North Carolina / Coastal Virginia: take off to stage 1, mainly towards the northeast.
Interior Virginia / West Virginia: take off to stage 1, mainly towards the east-southeast.
Maryland, Central / Western Pennsylvania: takeoff to stage 1, southeast.
Delaware, eastern Pennsylvania: Take off to stage 1, mainly to the south.
New Jersey / Southeast New York: Take off to stage 1, south-southwest.
South Coast of New England and Long Island, NY: Takeoff to stage 1, southwest.
Contingency plans
If Thursday's launch is cleared, Antares will take off approximately 22 minutes earlier per day. If, for example, the launch is made on Saturday, it will be at 4:01 a.m. EST (0901 GMT). Each day, the start window will last exactly 5 minutes.
Viewing details
The Visitor Center and the grounds will open on Thursday at 1 a.m. ET to support the display of Northrop Grumman's commercial refueling flight to the International Space Station. "The Visitor Center is approximately 4 miles [6 kilometers] of Wallops Island with a clear view of Pad OA, "according to the Visitor Center website." Parking and limited seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Arrive early to secure a space. "
For more information about the Visitor Center, including addresses, see:
The live launch coverage will begin on Thursday at 4 a.m. EST on NASA television and the agency's website. (And you can also see it here on Space.com, as indicated above.) Note that the launch webcast video is sometimes delayed up to 1 minute.
